H Stewart, for four years athletic di- H rector and football coach of Oregon H Agricultural college, has been elected H to a similar position with the TJnlver- H sit' of Nebraska and has announced H liis acceptance. His salary will be M $3000 a year and his service begins H next September. Stiehm's con- 1 tract with Nebraska did not terminate 1 until September 1, but the board de- 1 elded, following an extended session, H that his services could be dispensed 1 with at this time without embarrass- i ment to the department of athletics. Hl Stiehm Is already under contract with H Indiana university and it was felt his M interests naturally were greater with H that school than with Nebraska. H R. B. Rutherford, 1915 champion of H the cornluiBkevs' football team, was 1 elected assistant coach at a salary of 1 2500 a year, and Guy F. Reed was m made associate director and business M manager of athletics at a salary of H 2000. Rutherford and Reed announced H their acceptance of the positions. In m the interim of the departure of m Stiehm and the coming of Stewart, H Rutherford and Reed will be in charge 1 of the basketball squad and direct j such other athletic efforts as come 1 during the winter and spring seasons. H All the selections are yet to be rati- H fled by the regents of the unlversitv H and Chancellor Avery, but the chan- j cellor has already announced his ap- j proval of tho action of the board. 1 Dr. Stewart, the new coach, has 1 been considered by the board since j the resignation of Stiehm, several H weeks ago. His record with the Ore- H gon "Aggies" Impressed the athletic H board. He Is considered an authority B on football, basketball and track 1 work. He was with Purdue unlver- 1 sity before going to Oregon and be- H fore becoming a coach was rated a star performer on the gridiron with the team of Stubenville, O., and Western West-ern Reserve university of Cleveland. Portland, Ore , Jan. 9. Dr E. J. Stewart, athletic director of Oregon Agricultural college confirmed the Lincoln, Neb., announcement that he had accepted a similar position with the University of Nebraska. The salary, sal-ary, he said, was to be $4000 a year, not $3000 as stated in the Lincoln dispatch Dr Stewart Is passing the weekend week-end in Portland. oo |
