Many young men, believing the registry means the inauguration of compulsory son-Ice and' that men joining join-ing the army hereafter will bo considered consid-ered conscripts Instead of volunteers, went to tho recruiting offices which were kept open all day In some towns, to offer their services. On tho other hand, a number of young Irishmen working In England, Scotland and Ireland went to some counties In which registration regulation did not apply. The doparture of a party of these Irishmen from the Clyde was marked by noisy demonstration. A crowd gathered at Greenock harbor, jostled the prospective passengers and greeted greet-ed them with cries of "cowards." In Glasgow particularly a largo number of young mon hastened their marriages so they could be included among those listed as married in tho national register. Simultaneously with" tho Inauguration Inaugura-tion of the national register the National Na-tional Service League Issued a manifesto mani-festo calling a series of public meet-lugs meet-lugs throughout the country at which every fit man will be urged to offer his services to the country and resolutions reso-lutions will be passed calling on the government to "placo tho nation under un-der orders." oo |
