Show w : HEAT AIOS FIRES IN THE FORESTS San Francisco, Cai Aug. 30 Forest For-est fires were reported along the Paoiflc slope from Vancouver to the Mexican line and east to Idaho. None was large, alll seemed stubborn For the most part the damage threatened Is to watersheds rather than standing timber. Smoke from the fires clouded Puget Sound until navigation was perilous, two boats having suffered within a weok One grounded and the other was run down at her wharf. Many Fires Burning. Many fires wero .burning tonight in Oregon. Seven started by lightning In the vicinity of Medford several days ago still were giving trouble, and a dozen were reported from Bend Hood River, on tho Columbia river, reported a bad fire under control along the Columbia, and Roseburg re-burg re-burg reported fires still burning, after destroying much timber and grain. Ten miles east of Bonner's Ferry, Idaho, a fire summoned twenty-five forestry department men, after passing pass-ing beyond control of the locall forester for-ester and his assistants, while another was burning near Lakeview on Lake Pond d'Oreille. Fires under control were reported from tho Coeur d'Alene mountains. In California, the fifth presumably incendiary blaze in two weeks broke forth today near Montecillo, a suburb of Santa Barbara, a coast and winter resort of many wealth' easternera. Heat of an intensity unusual along the coast aided the flames. At noon tho thermometer showed 97 degrees in Los Angeles. |
