Show oo TERRIFIC ATTACKS ON THE ROSS FAIL Petrograd, Aug. 12. via London, Aug. 13, 1:50 a. m. Desperate German Ger-man attacks on the roads between Chelm and Vladova have been repulsed repuls-ed with virtually heavy losses, by the Russians, according to an official statement issued tonight at thc headquarters head-quarters of the general staff. Attempts At-tempts to overwhelm tho Russian advance ad-vance guards In the Riga district also have been repulsed, as have attacks at several other points on thc battle line. The communication follows: "In the region of the Riga Wednesday Wednes-day wo repulsed German attempts to overwhelm our advance guards. In the direction of Jacobstadt ana Dvinsk our troops on Tuesday and Wednesday continued their progress, successfully pressing the enemy. In tho region north of Vilkomir -e occu- . plod Kovarsk and Toviny after a fight and took some prisoners. Near Kovno we continued to repulse German Ger-man attacks on the front west of the Nlemen aB far as Jessla. The enemy was not successful anywhere except near the village of Godlevo, where a desperate artillery duel is progressing. 'On the front between the Narew and the Bug tho Germans continue persistent attacks, especially on the j roads to Lomza, Snidaovo and Kos- j sevo. Further south on two sides j of the Kiev-Malkln railway, our troops Wednesday afternoon were able to assume a counter offensive.
