Show ARREST OF NUN WHO IS CHARGED WITH MURDER James L VfcGivern was arrested at 1 10 a. in. today at the Utah Hot Springs by Deputy Sheriff J L Hob-son Hob-son and Detectives H C, Peterson and Tom Rurk. and Is now in the county Jail facing a probable, charge of murder. mur-der. Mcriivom is a Salt Lake City bartender and Is alleged to be responsible re-sponsible for the death of Mrs Cora Cowing, which occurred yesterday mornlnc at the St. Marks hospital at Salt Lake City. Mrs. Cowan died of pleuro-pneumonla, which Is said to have been Induced by wounds that she received in a stabbing affray at the WasatCfa Fish Club on November 11. The stabbing is alleged to have been done by Mctilvern. The Salt Lake city and county officials had tried to locate him ever since the llth, but failed. Their belief was that h" had come to Ogden and yes-terda: yes-terda: two detectives, R. L. Eddius ton and Berl S eager, came ber and co-operated with Deputy Sheriff Hob-son Hob-son in an attempt to locate him. About 11 o'clock last night Hobson l arned thai McGivern had gone to the Utah Hot Springs and with Detectives Burk and Peterson went there and placed him under arrest The man was broucht to Ogden and placed In the county jail, but refused to discuss his case. Salt Lake. Nov. 24 Pollowing the Stabbing of the woman McGivern disappeared. dis-appeared. Mct'fivern accompanied her to the roadhouse, as did a third party callod "Ted " The latter 's said to be a police officer from one of the smelter towns near Salt Lake. The Cowing woman was at a table in the roadhouse with Mrs Edith Smith, who lives at K34 East First South 6treot. Someone called the Cowing woman into the adjoining room and she returned a few moments mo-ments later, fell over Mrs Smith, and declared that she hnd been stabbed She was brought to the Plaza hotel ho-tel in this city and later taken to St. Mark's hospital where she was attended by the police surgeon. When taken to the hospital. Mrs Cowing declared that a diamond ring, valued at $175. had been slipped from her finger when she was being carried car-ried to an automobile following the stabbing. Detective Carl Carstensen of the police department investigated and on November 12 arrested Wendell Phillips, a race track follower, who ; had sold the ring to a local saloon-' saloon-' keeper He maintained that he had picked the ring up off the dancing floor at the roadhouse. Phillips is being held In the county jail under a , charge of robbery. Little Is known here of the Cow-', Cow-', ing woman, except that she has a sister in Nebraska and is said to have , a little daughter living somewhere In Nevada The body is at the Evans 1 undertaking rooms awaiting funeral arrangements. |
