The ultimatum, ultima-tum, delivered last Sunday, is said to have the approval of the European powers .that have conceded to America Amer-ica the right of leading in the solving solv-ing of the Mexican problem Huerta's regime is based on assassination. as-sassination. No government should recognize murder as a means to the gaining of control of a nation, no more so than should a state or a city in that manner condone the breaking break-ing of the commandmenL ' Thy shalt not kill " If Huerta refuses to comply, and thcro is reason to expect that refusal, the United States may be in a position, by the co-operation of the other pow ors, to break down Huer-tas's Huer-tas's financial credit and, by depriving him of the sinews of war, force the collapse of his military power. Huerta, without the army of Mexico Mex-ico at. his command, would be in greater danger of death than any "of the men against whom he ha3 had a murderous hatred. But after Huerta what? We doubt that the country, wjth Us hatreds of three years, can be restored to peace except through a compromise whereby where-by the powers of a president shall be placed in the hands of a commission com-mission made up of tho different factions struggling for supremacy. oo |
