Show IS, JOSEPH R. PIE FATALLY BURNED BY GASOLINE Mrs Sarah Paine, wife of Joseph R. Paine. 12n Twenty-sixth street, was fatally burned by an explosion of gasoline at her home at about 4 20 p. m , Saturday afternoon, death relieving her of her severe suffering at a little after 1 oclock Sunday mornlng The news of the accident came as a terrible shock to her numerous nu-merous relatives and frlonds In the kitchen with her at the time of the explosion was her daugh ter Florence thirteen years old who bad been assisting In the cleaning of a cloak. In the center of a wash tub in which there was some water, was placed a basin of gasoline for the cleaning The cloak was ready to hang outdoors when the mother, in the act of going to the door, brushed brush-ed past the hot tttove In an Instant the windows of the kitchen and the glass in a transom over the dining room door were blown out as the interior in-terior of the house burst Into a sea of flames. Florence, seeing her mother on fire, rushed to open the door leading to the back yard There was only an Instant delay but whpn they enierged from the room, the clothing of both was burning. Mrs Paine, for the moment, was concern ed over the child. A neighbor saw the fire and heard the screams and ran to ussIhi Mrs Paine who had thrown herself on the ground in an effort to smother the flames Re-fore Re-fore anything could be done, her I clothes were destroyed and even her shoes and stockings were burning Florence ran to a water tap In the yard and with wet hands brushed the fire from her dre a. In the meantime an unknown colored col-ored man ran Into the kitchen and risking his own life carried out the burning cloak nnd then re-entered and extinguished the flames that were- creeping up the walls. Mrs. Paine was carried Into the home on n mattress and was Immediately Imme-diately attended by four doctors, all of whom pronounced her burns too extensive and deep to be other than fatal Florence was found to have her tace and both arms burned and her hair singed, hut the doctors were en couraged to hope for no senous results re-sults as onl one of the bums was very deep Mrs Paine was a woman of high character, possessed of most lovable traits As a wife and mother she was all devotion and as a friend sincere sin-cere and true. In the Second ward where she had lived aM her married life she was loved by every one. Mrs Paine was born in London, r:ngland, September S, 1869 When she was 4 years old. the family, responding re-sponding to religious promptings, came to the United States, crossing the plains to Ogden In 1S62. She was married to Joseph R. Paine in 1878 She is survived by her husband and eight children, Mrs William H. Wil liams, Mrs. Frank Francis, Irene. Leona. Florence, Joseph. W illiam and John Pa'ne. Her brothers are Samuel, Sam-uel, William and Tames, and her sisters, sis-ters, Mrs. Charlotte BdBOO of Ogden md Mrs. Harry Warren of Winne-inucca Winne-inucca Nevada. Mrs. Warren arrived from Winne mucca last evening The funeral will be held in the Second ward meeting house at 2 p. m., Wednesday, with Bishop Robert McQutrfle officiating. Because of the burns about the face the casket will not be opened. Members of the Second Ward Re-1 lief society ;nd Veteran Firemen will attend the funeral In a body. AO |
