Show REMARKABLE RECESSION OF GLACIERS. Some attention Is being directed to the fact that the Muir Glacier is dis integrating along Its face, and there ib some speculation as to how long Ic 1 will continue to present a great at- j traction to tourists. No one can an-1 swer this of course, for the causes of the unusual moement are not known. Neither is it known with any certain-; ty for how long a time this great ice! mass has presented this appearance, 1 which made it famous. Assuming1 that the earliest charts of the coast 1 are correct and there is eer rea-, son to suppose they are there tnve been very remarkable recessions of I gla lers along the Atlantic Coast during dur-ing the last century, so that icefields, that formerly came down to the sea. are now a considerable distance from it As, we understand the earlier charts do not Indicate the position of Mulr Glacier, so there are no means of telling If it has recedeed The cause of the recession of glaciers glac-iers is not fully understood, but it seems to imply an average amelioration ameliora-tion of the climate Glaciers are fed a fioro snow-fields, and if they become smaller only one of two explanations ' seems poFsible Either the snowfall, in the higher levels must have dlmln-1 ished, or the temperature in the lower I levels has grow n higher. There are several reasons for supposing that the climate of the North Pacific zone , is becoming gradually warmer, although al-though the change is very gradual Sir Charles Lyeu, the famous geologist, geo-logist, in one of his books, speaks of the breaking away of a great ice 1 barrier near Greenland which oc- ' curred, if we are not mistaken, in ' 1846, and savs it was one of the mo6t significant events in the modern history his-tory of the world Victoria Colonist. |
