Show 00 PROWLERS IN PROVO ESCAPE GUN FIRE Provo, Aug 6 Night prowlers 011 the block where Albert S Jones has his grocery store in the First ward succeeded In arousing tho people of the neighborhood last night. Several shots were fired and the police made two trips to the disturbed districts, but without making an arrests About 12 o clock some, one was noticed on the outside by persons In John B Taylor's borne the old Pratt house One of Mr Taylor's sons fired and a man was seen to run from the block through the east side Whether or not he was wounded is a matter of doubt, but If not he was badly frightened, fright-ened, judging from his speed and the queer noises he made. The officers were called, but decided it was no use to look farther About an hour later there were four shots fired on the west side of the block, which again called the people of the vicinity out of doors. The shots had been fired by John W Guy at a man who was emerging from tho lot. and who refused to stop when Mr Guy halted him, but instead run back Into the lot In a large patih of corn. Mr Guy had to go into the house for more ammunition, and when he again came out he and the neighbors who had been attracted, and Chief 01 Police Giles and Officer Jonas Collins, who had again gone to the trouble tone, made a thorough Bearch of th block, but the man had escaped, or was so successfully hidden thai he was ont discovered. Officer Collins came near being shot while running down the sidewalk in response to a call of here h Is" from an excited citizen who mistook a big dog coming com-ing out of the corn for the man seen by Mr. Guy. When others came In I response to the call Collins was seen running, and if he had ont vigorously asserted his Identity and registered an objection against being sacrificed, the guns of the posse which were already al-ready aimed at him would have been discharged. |
