The purpose of the trip was to tom tomake i m make le an on inspection of ot the arlous I II road projects now under construe construe- construction I tion and to look over some of the I wilder and more secluded mountain moun moun- mountain mountain I tain trails that may be roads Of the future I This purpose said Mr III FInch led the party Into a II typical moun moun- mountain mountain tain country and furnished a II rare opportunity to see timbered and I mountain western scenery at Its best Nineteen days were I consumed consumed ed cd In tho the trip and more than miles mUes of roads covered The route after traveling the tho main high highway oy ay to Boise Dolse Ontario and Wels r ids Ida led through the tho North and South South highway highway now being rebuilt through the central portion of Idaho This highway will wilt be one of the scenic automobile roads of the west It leads through real timber and up tho Weiser river to Its source ana down the tho Salmon from the rise of the west branch The road la s made more Interesting because It passes the old placer diggings where in early das da s the gravel was so rIch that half halt half a pint of nuggets was aday's a ada ada da days day's s 's harvest according to the old old- timers old timers and in one winter more than men came camo to this part of Idaho to pan gold Many of ot the tho scenes of the old diggings are along the North and South highway TROUT STREAMS The Welser Weiser and Salmon rivers are clear rushing trout streams through virgin pine and as soon as this highway Is completed It will doubtless become a mecca for forca cambers ca ers and fishermen Its It la Is Willi be- be beIng being be being ing made doubly attractive by the construction of more than 20 miles of broad highway along along- the shore of the Coeur dAlene dAleno lake The I portion of the lake shore traversed by the new highway is densely with Ith pine being In the midst of ot the northwest lumber region leads by some somo Of ot the largest saw mills of the entre country A side trip to Wallace was taken and visits made to Burke Kellogg and the mining towns that make Wallace Vallace the mining metropolis of the state Burke Durle presents a desolate deso deso- desolate desolate late outlook because of the fire that swept the canyon recently Tile road supervisor Iso I has been compelled to place a railing around the three fine lne monuments that have havo been erected to the pioneer engineer who laid out the road to protect them from vandalism The face tace was being mutilated and the marble carvings of the side trip was made through Glacier park The region along the northern edge of o Montana and Idaho is one of fascination for tor le leperson and person lakes who loves timbered solitude and lakes th that at ha have o not teen been re- re remade re remade made by men Many lakes were pas passed ed These were timbered to the tho waters water's edge and as few travel the road the game gamo was quite tame The
