Show DIRECTORY OPERATOR SPEEDS UP SERY1CE Has Important Part in Potting Through Long Distance Telephone Calls When a person places a long distance dis-tance telephone call and Is unable to furnish the telephone number of the party desired in the distant city or town, the call 1b referred to one of the directory operators. At the directory positions are kept th latest telephone directories lor the larger cities of the country and for many of the smaller places. itofo&aa ii dtiit ST.i DIRECTORY OPERATORS The directory operator first consults con-sults her bulletin to learn which one of her numerous binders contains con-tains the telephone directory of the place being called. It Is often difficult for her to find the telephone tele-phone number fon which she is looking because the calling party may have spelled the name differently differ-ently than it appears In the directory, direc-tory, or the street address may ba a little different In such cases, and also wherever she Is unable to find a number which appears to be the one she Is after, she calls the party back again and tries to get further Information which will belp her in lot''.tIng the number. After I. e has located the number num-ber and entered It on the ticket record of the subscriber's call, or having made a careful search and failed to find it, she sends the ticket tick-et along to the outward operator to complete the call The furnishing furnish-ing of the telephone number by the directory operators helps the outward out-ward operator and speeds op ths service the subscriber receives, for the outward operator Is then able to pass her call directly by number to the Inward operator lm the city or town the subscriber Is calling. In those cases where the directory direc-tory operator has been unable to locate a number, the outward operator oper-ator must frequently use np valuable valu-able time on the toll line by getting the information operator in the distant dis-tant place and trying to securs tfc unmfrir from her. |
