The crlrl who answers the myriad of calls made then might be termed the patron saint of sociability, but the night operator She la the girl who Is on duty when the world, or most of it. Is tired of play and has gone to sleep, when the theatres have emptied their gay crowds Into the streets and become darkened, when the lights are no longer burning tn the various homes throughout the city or town, when even the corner drug stores have closed their doors and served their last customers. Then it is that the night telephone operator is on duty, ready lor whatever emergency may occur, prepared always to serve and to give what help she can in times ot stress or urgent need. Then It Is that telephone trafflo is at Its lowest ebb. The calls that come during the wee small hours are few, but they are none the less important. Among the most common of those that flash on the night operator's board are the calls for doctors and hospitals. Then, also, are those for the police, for crime likes to hide under the cover of darkness. Fires have a habit of breaking out at night, and death, too, often makes its tragic visit during those hours. Besides, there are those whose working hours ar at night and to whom the telephone tele-phone Is even a greater aid and comfort than it is to the daylight workers. Indeed, the night operator experiences expe-riences many a thrll!. and at times her part becomes a heroic one. Often her calm voice and her assurance as-surance that she will summon aid have served to restore confidence to some terror stricken individual, while her resourcefulness and initiative in-itiative have led to the saving of a great many lives.
