Show I read in the papers of another original American idea. It ii car ferries. fer-ries. The car ferry steamer that I transport whole freight trains across I Lake Michigan were the first in the , world. They were started in and have been widely adopted. The car I ferries on Lake Baikal in Siberia, 'across the Baltic between Germany jand Sweden, across the English Channel, Chan-nel, and between Havana and Key West wove all deigned after our Lake Michigan ferries, which originated origi-nated a generation ago. The Lake Michigan ferries are operated through out -the winter though the ice often reuchos three feet in thickness. It costs no more to operate one of these big Luke Michigan car ferries than a locomotive, and the movement of the curs is more rapid than when they are upon rails. The distance between be-tween the oust and the northweet is gvently shortened by avoiding the long rail route around the south end of Lake Michigan, and much addition addit-ion time is saved by avoiding the congested Chicago terminals, the neck of the nut ion's rail bottle. Yet there are those who nay that foreigners are moro original and daring in engineering engineer-ing projects! |
