Show r rom the dally of september 7 SQUARE ali 9 question qa estion of the partition 0 union square came up as expected at last evenings session of the city council the feeling of a considerable number of the citizens aad the individual views of the members of the council BO far as they expressed themselves on the subject can be ascertained certa ined from the minutes of the session as given in another column happily alderman Pre shaws wise suggestion that action be postponed for one eek prevailed with the council during the interim it Is hoped the matter will receive the thoughtful consideration which it deserves councillor coneys coreys opposition to the bale we regard as sound and statesmanlike his view is that held by all who can look even a little way into the future the cites needs today when we number only will not be the same five years hence when we number and to sacrifice the convenience of all future time tor the paltry wants of the moment involves a responsibility which no man ought to be anxious to assume and which in our opinion will be suicidal the ludicrous attitude of councillor blaisdell Bla iadell should be regarded charitably we agree with him in thinking be scarcely knows yet what he does want the ensuing week may bring much light to all of us on this interesting subject bat when be discourses in a spirit of local political jealousy about compelling the county to buy a larger site for buildings when they need new ones he simply shows his inability to rise to any understanding of the case if he could project his mind into the future at all he would realize that when two corporations are so indissolubly dis united in all their affairs as this city and county it will be the right of the citizens to demand that the business of both be transacted at the same place it is not impossible that within bis life not as councillor however he may see the two corporations amalgamated into one the city and county of ogden we trust be may be spared as a useful private citizen to acknowledge alie wisdom of those who oppose his ill considered views on the question at iesue As to the other reasons urged for boiling the land the facts do not prove that business will be driven to other localities lf the square be preserved the north side 0 fifth estreet Is pretty prosperous and we have not heard of any property along there going the new hotel will be located immediately facing the block and one of the latest and best bua mesa blocks in the city that of sir sidney stevens has been erected further along on main estreet the experience of our own city is borne out by that of the principal cities of the country and as to the argument that with only half the square we would detill have a larger park ihan nine out of ten of such spots throughout the land it need only be eadd that in other places the authorities have made their parks small only because they could not get them larger they and their constituents know this perfectly well they made use of all they had and would be glad to have bad much more if preserved as an undivided plat union square will some day be graced by the finest municipal structures of the west with spacious epa cious surroundings permitting their bearty to be been and enjoyed if the halt or three fourths of it is bold we may prepare ourselves for the never ending regret which is eure to come |
