Show DOLARWAY PAVING TEST Following his recent investigation In the matter of street paving materials, mate-rials, Mr. J. A. Heudrickson of Logan, who is president of th elntermountaln Good Roads association, wrote a letter let-ter to Paul D. Sargent, acting director of the office of public roads In the department of agriculture at Washington, Wash-ington, D. C. The reply that was received by Mr. Hondrickson follows: "Your letter of July 3, requesting Information upon the value of a bituminous bi-tuminous coating for concrete pave ment has been received. "This form of construction was also first tried by this office in some of Its experiments at Ithaca, New York, in 1909, and more recently In tho vicinity vi-cinity of New York City. Mr. Page Is at present away from the city, but I think that his views regarding the pavement laid in Ann Arbor are in close accord with your own. From the results to date and the general Interest In-terest In this class of pavement, we are encouraged to put down several lengthy experimental soctlons in comparison with other construction work this summer, and In. this case will endeavor to determine the relative rela-tive value of various type6 of bituminous bitu-minous materials as a surface coating coat-ing over concrete, "We think that the cost of maintenance main-tenance of this type of pavement is also an important matter for investigation. investi-gation. This will, of course, be largely large-ly dependent upon traffic conditions, and, where theso conditions are particularly par-ticularly severe, the coating may possibly pos-sibly have to be renewed every season. sea-son. We have reason to believe, however, how-ever, that a bituminous mat may serve other purposes than that of providing merely an attractive and dustless surface, In that It will protect pro-tect tho concrete during Its early hardening periods and also assist Jn preventing tho rapid drying out and consequent cracking due to contraction. contrac-tion. If such proves to be the case, a single application may well pay for Itself If It only lasts through a single season. "In order to obtain the best results, It appears to he essential that the concrete shuold be absolutely clean and dry at the time the bituminous material la applied, and In order that this condition may bo brought about In surfacing old concrete or brick, it seems most advisable to thoroughly flush tho surface with water in order or-der to remove all traces of dust which might prevent tho bituminous material mate-rial from adhering strongly. "Four surfacing thus far, I think that you win find tars have been most used and I am Inclosing a specification spe-cification for a satisfactory grade of such material which you' may find convenient to use should you decide ho undertake any of this class of construction." con-struction." "Trusting that this will fully answer an-swer your request, I remain, very respectfully yours, "PAUL D. SARGENT. "Acting Dlroctor. At Ann Arbor the "Dolarway" paving pav-ing is used. It is a five-inch concrete base with a thin bituminous ton which adheres to the concrete and the cost Is less than one-half that of asphalt paving. |
