The death of Mrs. H j Sarah Piatt Docker, formor president H of the National Federation of Wom- Hl en's Clubs, marks the passage of one H of the foremost women of tho nation. H She wqb widely known as a distin- H guisbed club woman, philanthropist, H (leader of women's suffrage and tlro- H Mess worker in many public spirited H movements. Hl It was due much, to bar efforts that H the Denver Woman 'b clab became one H of the most useful and widely known H in America, and it was because of her H recognized ability t&at the National 11 Federation of Women's Clubs elected 1 her their national president at St. H Louis in 1904. H Mrs Decker, whose maiden name H was Sarah Sophia Chase, was born H at Mclndoe Falls, Vt. Her mother H was a descendant of the famous Ad- H ams family of MasBachuetts, her fa- H ther, Edwin Chase, was a prominent H temperance advocate. H The then Sarah Chase received a M high school education and made her M advent Into public life at Holyoke, H Mass,, where she was made one of H the members of a board of trustees H for the distribution of funds loft for H the deserving poor. H At Queens, Long Island, where she M went after her first marriage, Mrs. 1 Decker was identified with the work 1 of the orphans' home and the child M welfaro movement, but on her advent H in Denver in 1S87 she was known H only In the restricted circles of her H own social set B Long before the Denver Woman's Hl club was organized in 1S94 and sh 1 elected its first president, Mr6. Decker M gave her money and support to the H campaign for woman's suffrage. H In tho first silver campaign of j Bryan Mrsr Decker took an active H part During tho second Bryan cam- H palgn she presided at one of the larg- H est political mass meetings ever dl- H rcctcd in the United States by a H woman. H Mrs, Decker became the first wom- j an member of the Colorado state M board of patrons, and in 1S9S was ap- H pointed a member of the Colorado 1 board of charities and corrections. |
