Show Congressman B e r g e r Making Hard Fight to Impeach Hanf ord. Seattle, July 8. The house judiciary judi-ciary sub-committee, after spending three days in tho investigation of Congressman Berber's charge against United States Judge Cornelius H. Hanford, growing out of his disfranchisement disfran-chisement of Leonard Olsson, a Socialist, So-cialist, and after spending a week in investigating Judge Hanford's alleged excessive use of intoxicating liquors, will continue to hear evidence on the latter charge today. General evidence evi-dence as to the Judge'B character and his legal ability Is excluded by the committee. The charge of misconduct growing out of the judge's issuance of an injunction in-junction in the Seattle, Ronton & Southern Street Railway suit is next in order, and Is expected to consume several days. Representative McCoy has shown a lively interest in the Eli Melovich case, In which Judge Hanford Han-ford set aside a verdict of $12,000 for loss of an arm, on the ground that he himself, "from weariness," used the word "any" Improperly in charging the Jury. Representatives McCoy has also during the past week sought for evidence concerning the appointment of Sutcllffe Baxton as receiver of bankrupt firms by Judge Hanford, and the allowance of large fees to Baxton. |
