O'NEILL DEFENDS FATHER Editor Standard: Through the columns col-umns of tho papers during tb last two days, tho public has hoard one i sido of a caso of trouble between Of-I Of-I fleor Moroni Brown and Mrs. J. J. McGregor, and as tborc is always two sides to any story, the writer desires to correct ono or two statements which appeared In Saturday's and Sunday's papers. The troublo which resulted in the arrest of Mrs J. J. McGregor last Friday night by Special Officer Moroni Mo-roni Brown his beon brewing for noarly two years. Mr. Brown has for the past thlrty-flvo thlrty-flvo years been taking the water for irrigating his garden from tho ditch on Washington avonuc and about two yenrg ago Mr J. J. McGregor purchased pur-chased a home on Washington ncr this ditch, and at onco filled up the ditch; this necessitating Mr. Brown's getting tho water at another place. This was done and Mr. Brown pro-pared pro-pared another ditch, but the trouble did not end because. ?ccording t. tbo McGregors, the water backed and flooded their lawn and yard. Words have passed between tho two parties several times In tho past and last Friday, while Mr. Brown wjs trying to Irrigate his garden, he was annoyed several times by having his headgaio taken out aud hidden. He was unable to find out Just who was removing the dam, so ho determined to watch, and about 11 o'clock Friday night, while ho was lying in wait (or the intruder, very much to his astonishment, aston-ishment, Mrs. J. J. McGregor came out of her homo and walked down the street a few rods and removed tho headgatc. At this point catching Mrs. McGregor in tho act. Brown placed her under arrest and with tho assistance assist-ance of his son. Ora. proccedel to take her to police headquarters Mrs. McGregor resisted the officer, but Instead of being dragged from her house and babies to tho Jail, as stated In the papers, she voluntarily neglected her littlo ones and left the house at the late hour to interfere with the water headgate. Whon they had proceeded about a quarter of a block toward the Jail, tho owner of an automobile, wno was standing by the curbstone of the sl.le-walk, sl.le-walk, offered to take them to the police po-lice station. Brown accepted tho offer of-fer and all were speedily carried to tho Jail, whore Mrs. McGregor was released a few momenta later As for there being any brutal treatment on the part of Officer Brown In making mak-ing this arrest, it Is not bo. and Mrs McGregor acknowledged to friend that she was sorry that the papers had been so bold in thoir sUteinenta. as a great many of them were false.
