Show WHY ALLEN IS Once Powerful Leader of the Republican Party in Kansas Now in the Third Party Accords an Interview to the Standard Says "Stealing is Stealing" and Cannot Be Excused' "There has never been a time when tbo American peoplo have expressed ex-pressed such a preference i for a man as they have for Roosovelt," said Henry J. Allen, tho Chautauqua speaker, speak-er, who last night delivered a lecture at'Glonwood park. Tn his Chautauqua address Mr. Allen did not touch upon politics except In a general way hut to a representative of tho Standard ho told tho story of the Chicago convention con-vention and what ho considers the hlpgest political steal on record. It was Allen who made tho "bolt-Inp; "bolt-Inp; address" when tho "Progressive" delegates withdrew from tho Chicago convention and It Is likely that Allen will play an important part In the formation of the national Progresavo party. Allen reviewed tho political I situation at a banquet of Kansas people peo-ple given in the Chautauqua cafo. The banquet was served by Cyrus Chnrles and was a delightful affair. It was after the tables had been cleared away, however, that the Kansan talked to the representative of the Standard. "Four-fifths of the Roosovelt dole-gates dole-gates at tho Chicago convention were from the states that conBtltuto tho backbone of the Republican party and about one-half of the Taft delegates were from tho Southern states, where we havo not had a victory and havo no hope of a victory for generations. Taft won onlv by the fraudulent acts of the. convention. When It had seated all of the contested delegates It still needed seventy votc3 and then It deliberately defrauded the majority of votes in California. Washington, Ariznoa, Texas and other states where Roosevelt had won a clean-cut victory vic-tory in tho primaries. "Tho organisation of tho new party cannot holp but appeal to tho honest and thinking voters of this country and thoro are enough of these to elect n president. Tho old parties have been growing closer cogether for the past twenty-five years so thai there is now practically no difference of attitude on any of the Important Issues- There is not enough difference differ-ence on the tariff question to make an Issue out of It and there is no other issue that thev differ very grcatlv over. We are coming to the natural cleavage of the political views of the country, which to be between be-tween the progressive and the conservative con-servative elements of our sodoty. The fight for president will be between Mr Roosevelt and Mr Wilson. While Wilson Is personally a Progressive man, his party is reactionary and you can't make a new vehlclo out of an old one by putting on one new wheel; the wagon will still have to travel on the other 'thres wheels and its speed will bo gauged by the old wheels " Mr Allen said that ho made no apologies for bolting the convention as he could not recognize any difference differ-ence between political theft and any other kind of theft. "Stealing Is stealing," he said, "In politics just tho same as In business. When a man excuses theft in poll-tics poll-tics by saying that its a matter of politics, he has either lost his moral sonse or has not kopt up with the growth of political morality in this country." Tho Kansan was agreeably surprised sur-prised with tho city of Ogden and with the surrounding country. He was taken out through-the canyon In an automollbe yesterday and given an opportunity to see tho farming and fruit growing district of Weber county coun-ty and he was apparently almost as Interesting in his comments on the country as on politics. |
