Show SMUGGLED OPIUM FOUND IN A TREE Seattle, Oct. 21. A relic of pioneer opium-smuggling days came to light todaj when E. Olson was clearing land between Port Townscnd and Port Discovery and unearthed a cache of opium valued at $1,500. The opium was encased in several Bheot-Iron boxes. The boxes were found In a stump and wore so badlv rusted that they fell to oleces when handled and the fhc-tacl tins dropped drop-ped out. The find was reported to the customs officials, who took charge of tho opium. The opium is believed to hao been cached more than twenty years ago, when a fleet of sloops were operated op-erated between the Sound and Victoria, Vic-toria, bringing in contrabanl from British Columbia city by making the run at night. oo- |
