Show LONDON'S MINERALIZED AIR. London, England, has the reputation reputa-tion of being a very sooty place. The air of Pittsburg Is probably dirtier, and perhaps also that of a few other manufacturing cities, but London's atmosphere at-mosphere Ib certainly well up in tho list of richly mineralized airs. Jt is something of a surprise, therefore, to find that tho London air In the "city" area deposits only about ton grains of duBt and soot per square yard per day. Two ordinary five-grain gelatine gela-tine capsules would thus contain tho entire deposit of a full twenty-four hours ovor a surface of nine square These figures were obtained recently recent-ly by tho London Lancet. Four so-callcd so-callcd gauges were sot up In different parts of London. Each gauge presented present-ed a Burface of four square feet to tho air, and the deposit upon this surface was at staled Intervals carefully gathered gath-ered up and weighed The gauge In the "city" area, of comae, gave the largest record. The Lancet calculated calculat-ed that at the deposit rate In this re-1 glon there would fall ovory year upon the entire 117 Bquare miles of surface In London about .70,050 tons of aerial dirt. The gauges near Westminster showed a rate of deposit that would amount to 53,820 tons per year, and that near the edge of the metropolitan metropoli-tan area very much less. Thero were but four gauges,- so no averugo for the entire city of any value could be obtained The Bub-stances Bub-stances deposited wero chiefly carbon, sulphates, chlorides and ammonia, the larger part of thom obviously the products of the London chlmneys.-Now chlmneys.-Now York Globe. rrtm |
