Show TOO POOR TO' KEEP OUT OF JAIL Jack Miller, Tom Conlcy, W. H. Stump, James Carroll and H. Lundcr-man Lundcr-man were brought Into police court this morning by a deputy sheriff and all except btump pleaded guilty to. a charge of vagrancy. Tho officer testified that thero had been a numbor of complaints received lately from residents living in tho neighborhood of Thirtieth street and Wall avenue to the effect that tho hobocB wore getting numerous in that vicinity and were causing much an-noyanco an-noyanco by asking for food and alms. Night before last, he said, he received two calls from uiat vicinity and upon his arrival he found a largo crowd of men sitting aiound a big lire. The five mon who appeared in court this morning wns all that he was ablo to arrest unnided. The officer stated further fur-ther that when the men wero searched at tho county Jail th'ey were found to be without means. Tho four men who pleadod guilty stated that they wero trying to get cast in the hope of liqdlng work and all admitted that thoy had asked for food. Stump, when nBked what he had to say for himself, said that he had asked for nothing, as ho had money enough to buy his supper on the night of his arrest and had done so. He wont on to say that he did not think blB offense of-fense had constituted vagrancy and when Judgo Reeuuv tried to explain the attitude of the city, he undertook to arguo with tho court He was given giv-en a sentence of twenty days in jail Of the others Carroll and Lunderman were given fifteen dajs each and Miller Mil-ler and Conlcy five days each. |
