Show H J. WHAT IS A LIBEL? Though a man falsely charges in public pnnt that Wm. Glasmann, with two others, ''absorbed all the cash in the treasury," the court says there is nothing wrong in the charge, as it does not indicate that Wm. Glasmann did anything wrong even if ho did all that was charged against him, because the statement by the defendant, de-fendant, Geo. Wilson, did not say Win. Glasniann had absorbed the money "dishonestly or unlawfully." According to this ruling of Judge Harris, this paper could say tomorrow morning that the cashier of the First 'National bank had absorbed all the cash in the bank, and, whether the statement is true or false, the cashier of the bank and the other officers would have to grin and bear it. The law is a funny thing, is it not? Is it not about tirao the people were given the right to initiate laws in order to stop professional pro-fessional blackmailers and character slanderers from maligning honest citizens? Fortunately, r. Glasmann, at the preliminary hearing, was able to prove by the best oitizens of Ogden that ever' slanderous word Wilson had uttered as to IEr. Gtosmann's connection with the fair was absolutely false and without truth. The court, however, held that unless it is charged that a man "unlawfully absorbs" another's an-other's money; it is not libelous. |
