Show Vitamin Foe -Of Many Ills THOUGH biochemists discovered discov-ered vitamins only a quarter of i century ago, extensive research jince that time has proven conclu-(ively conclu-(ively that they play a vitally im-oortant im-oortant role in our evervdav livins Their discovery has been haded as the greatest scientific finding since the days of Lister and Pasteur. As cures for ailments ranging from loss of appetite to cirrhosis of the liver, vitamins have been amazingly proficient, and doctors are using them widely today as substitutes sub-stitutes for drugs and even, in some cases, operations, so effective is their power. Their best source, reports re-ports Maxine Davis in the September Septem-ber Cosmopolitan, is readily available. avail-able. Practically all fresh foods contain con-tain them in varying strengths. Vitamin B, which is found in grains, nuts, and such meats as lean pork and chicken, will go a long way to counter the effects of alcohol. Obstetricians have found it an infallible cure for nausea in pregnancy, and physicians have treated arthritis effectively through its use. Doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Hospi-tal, Miss Davis reports, have eliminated elimi-nated the necessity of an operation by using vitamins in severe cases of rickets. The procedure is simply to feed the stricken patient foods containing vitamins which make the bone structure pliable. When this has been accomplished, the bones are set m the desired position in casts and the patient is then fed a - diet completely lacking in the vitamin vita-min used at first, thereby allowing the bones to harden. A great deal, Miss Davis savs has yet to be discovered in the field of vitamins, but they have already earned the title of "miracle workers. |
