Show The Power of Education By DR. E. A. JACOBSEN Civilization can not rise higher than the capacity of the people who bear it. The capacity to live a civilized life is maintained through the processes of education. Expanacn and improvement of educational opportunities have been a near universal acjmpaii-lnicnt acjmpaii-lnicnt oJ social progress- The power of education as a force in individual and social developmeii: may be tealized by comparison of tho?e who have had ana utilized educational advantage with those who lave been deprived of this advantage. The advance of American Am-erican tulture has boon close,y paralleled with advance of the e.iu:aUoual system, Ea.':lv leading nation of today proprlv boasts an eff-citnt system of . education, educa-tion, while backward nations ara characterized by few and limited educatirnr.1 advantages. Nations, once backward, have forged ahead to positions of leadernip and power after a period of liberal provision for the education of i the masses. Nations of prominence promin-ence may decline in their power and influence by prolonged neglect neg-lect of the education of the people. The difference between a nazi and a free, self governing citizen citi-zen of a democratic society is not one of race, of biological constitution, or even a political geography. It is a difference of ideology ai.d of social philosophy engendered by an educational system. What we would have the nation or the world of tomorrow become, we must prpvide for m the educational system of today. |
