Show NO APPLES? THERE'S A REASON Among the suggestions each year . along the line of food production is one refering to the raising of apples. We are told that apples are one of our best fruits, in fact the old saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" is quite true. The rocky formation of our city . provides a wonderful natural drainage which is necessary for good apple orchards but we now find few apple trees about the homes where in the early days very few homes were without them. Men and whomen who are 50 years of age will remember in their early childhood days the wonderful trees of Golden-sweet apples, Strawberry apples, Maiden-blush, Pearmains, Yellow-transparent, and crabs that not only provided food for the family but provided a delicious treat to the neighbors and friends from other places as they would visit in the city. The kids enjoyed lying under the old apple tree in the coolof its shade eating of that delicious fruit just as much as the young folks today enjoy going to the ice-cream parlor. Professor Coe of the Utah State Agricultural college col-lege is trying to encourage the planting of more apple trees and is willing to give information about the cultivation cul-tivation of them. They must be pruned properly so the sun can reach all the branches; they must be sprayed for the control of the worms that spoil so much of the fruit; and if large fruit is desired there must be a culling of the blossoms or fruit while it is small. It would be a wonderful thing if every home would raise an apple tree or two. There are two major difficulties at present noticeable. notice-able. They are : where there are only one or two trees in a neighborhood the youngsters will not let the fruit ripen. They pick it almost as soon as the fruit can be seen and in doing so do damage to the tree. Of course, we all know that "the stolen fruit always tastes better than the fruit given us." The other problem is the spraying. No person feels like its worth while to have a spraying outfit for just one or two trees. If the college, the chamber of commerce or farm bureau would sponsor such a project so that those with only a tree or two could get them sprayed there would be more incentive to raise apple trees. We would like to see such a project fostered. |
