Show Utah Cricket Control Work Begins March 10 Mormon cricket control activity In Utah will begin on March 10, Dr. G. F. Knowlton, state leader in grasshopper and Mormon cricket crick-et control, said. In about one week H. F. Thorn-ley, Thorn-ley, federal control supervisor for Utah, will report for duty, and control plans for 1941 will be worked out in cooperation with county commissions, various federal fed-eral agencies, and in cooperation with the state of Utah. Mormon cricket eggs probably are already hatching on some warm south-slopes. The young crickets often emerge as soon as the snow melts and are sometimes some-times . seen hopping . about on snow, Dr. Knowlton stated. Because Be-cause of this early activity an early start on control Is needed to protect crops, and to reduce Injury to range livestock feed plants. Tlie grasshopper control program pro-gram will begin as soon as hoppers hop-pers begin to natch, Entomologist Knowlton emphasized. Supplies of grasshopper bait materials already in some counties will be supplemented supple-mented with additional material, so far as funds permit, during the course of the control campaign, State Leader Knowlton indicated. Grasshoppers will again constitute a serious menace to crops in many Utah counties this season, particularly particu-larly where control measures were neglected last season. |
