Show Funeral Services for Prominent Athlete to be Held Saturday JOSEPH R. JENSON Funeral services for Professor Joseph R. Jenson, 59, head of the Utah State Agricultural college physical education department for 22 years, who died Tuesday at 9-30 p. m. of a sudden paralytic stroke will be conducted Saturday at 1 p. m. in the Logan Fourth ward chapel under direction of Bishop Ira N. Hayward. Professor Jenson, considered a western authority in his field, became be-came ill Tuesday morning and about noon was taken to the Cache Valley hospital and placed under an oxygen tent. His death came as a shock to the thousands of friends he made in the physical physi-cal education field. A native of MiUvUle, ha was born March 21, 1885 a son of Rasmus and Ingri Jeppson Jenson. He was educated in Cache county schools and attended the old Brigham Young college where he was an outstanding athlete. Coach Jenson starred on the BYC barketball team of 1907 and as captain led the team to a state championship. The following year-he year-he was re-electd and the team went through the season undefeated. unde-feated. That squad was one of the first Utah basketball teams to tour the east and at the national AAU tournament in Chicago, HL, won second place. Coach Jenson was named the outstanding center cen-ter of the tourney. A versatile athlete, he also played on the BYC's footbal team, was catcher on the baseball club and an outstanding trackman, running the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds fiat. I His first coaching assignment was at the old Oneida Academy ' in Preston, Idaho. He returned to ! BYC in 1910 and served as coach and physical education director. i (Continued on Page Five) |
