Grant, venerable leader jof the Mormon church and one of the most prominent men in the United States will observe his 85th. birthday anniversary in Salt Lake City, Saturday. Due to hl failing health, there will be no public function, but members of his immediate family and church officials will gather at the Lion iouse for an informal luncheon. President Grant was bom in Salt Lake City, November 22, 1856, a son of Jedediah M. Grant and Rachel Rldgeway Ivins. Since his graduation from the University of Deserety he has-been constantly active - in the church and business affairs of the state -of Utah. He has served! as an apostle in the church for thirty-sevin years and upon the death Elder Francis M. Lyman, January 1, 1904, he "became senior, member of the Council of the Twelve. On November 23, 1918, four days after the death of President Joseph Jo-seph F. Smith, Heber J. Grant became the seventh president of the church by action of the council coun-cil of the Apostles. He has held the position since that time and has witnessed a remarkable growth in the church. Members of all stake presidencies, presiden-cies, ward bishoprics and all church officials in the Northern Utah region have prepared greetings greet-ings to be sent President Grant on his anniversary. |
