Porter Dies; Won Journalistic Fame Funeral arrangements were being be-ing made today for Professor Wilford D. Porter, 44, one of the outstanding agricultural journalists journal-ists in the United States, and professor of journalism, college and extension editor at Utah State Agricultural college, who died Thursday about 11 p. m. at his home, 421 East Fourth North street. Professor Porter was serving liis second term as president of the American Association of Ag. ricultural Editors, the only west 's Journalism fraternities; of Pi ; Gamma Nu, natonal honorary , social science fraternity, and Epsilon Siga Phi, national ex- ! tension fraternity. An active member of Logan I Kiwanis club, he was past pres- : ident, serving during 1941-42 and was president of the Utah State Agricultural college faculty asso- ciation in 1936. He was a vet- j eran of World War I. Interested also ,dn dramatics he participated in several school plays and was director of many I Little Theater productions. He was treasurer four years of the Little Theater organization. A member of the L.D.S. church Professor Porter was an elder in the Logan Fifth ward and was Cache stake editor for the Des-eret Des-eret News church section. He was superintendent for several yars of the Hyrum Stake Sun. day school and a member of the Hyrum Stake, M.I.A. board and for five years a member of the Cache Stake . M.I.A. board. He had given much of his time as a lecturer to M.I.A; and church organizations throughout the val ley. He married Blondell Cardon of Logan, October 2, 1918 in the Logan Templet . . v.. a muii ever to noia this position, posi-tion, and was recognized throughout through-out the nation for his ability as a journalist. Recently he was offered of-fered a position as college editor at Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y., but declined, preferring to remain at USAC. During the past summer he was chairman of meetings held in Washington, D. C, of a special spe-cial advisory council called to discuss the food information pro. gram of the federal government. Information specialists of the U. S. department of agriculture and seven other agricultural college editors attended the meet. From June 27-29 he presided at the national oonference of the American Amer-ican Association of Agricultural college editors held at Manhattan, Manhat-tan, Kansas. He assisted three times with writing of the national Extension service report and was called to Washington, D. In 1934 he was granted a leave of absence to attend Wisconsin University and was -..-.u tue aegree of master of science in journalism after a -year of outstanding graduate study there. When he returned to the college, he instructed journalism classes and devoted a portion of his time to handling publicity for the college and serving as Extension editor. Since 193d he had been head of the journalism department, was chairman chair-man of the publications board and faculty advisor for all publications. pub-lications. While a student at USAC he was editor two consecutive terms of Student Life, campus weekly the only student since 1909 to hold the position two years and was a member three years of the student executive council. Ha was president of Sigma Alpha Nu. honorary senior scholastic society; Phi Kappa Iota, now Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity, fra-ternity, and of the Quill club Professor Porter was a member of Sigma Delta Chi. and Pi : Delta Epsilon, national honorary 1 |
