Show Nebeker Explains Women's Aid To Farm Defense Utah farm women can make a practical contribution toward meeting the farm defense production produc-tion goals for 1942 and help the family budget as well by producing pro-ducing more of the foods used in the farm home, Sidney J. Neb-eker, Neb-eker, chairman of the State USDA defense board declared this week. Pointing out that many lines of food production are now overtaxed over-taxed because of heavier dor-es-tic demand and the requirements of the lend-lease program,. Mr. Nebeker stated that even a small increase cn an individual farm would benefit the nation and insure in-sure a supply of nutritious foods for the family's use. The products prod-ucts which are most needed are milk, eggs, pork and vegetables, he explained. In contribution to the department depart-ment of agriculture "food for freedom" drive, Utah farmers have been asked to increase the producMin o4 milk from approximately ap-proximately 559,000 000 pounds this year to 630,000,000 pounds in 1942. The state goal for eggs is 26,294,000 dozen, compared with an estimated production of 22,667,-000 22,667,-000 dozen this year. "Most farm families have grown or raised a large part of the foods used in the home, but this year, more than ever before every ev-ery farm family should try to be self-sufficient as possible," Mr. Nebeker counseled. "Any new production which is added to the nation's total by families who have not been producing all their own needs of milk, eggs, and meat, will release just that much for those who must depend upon commercial supplies." The farm defense production goals include 18,100 farm gard- ens compared with 14,507 In 1941. An extra milk cow, a flock of chickens or a pig will also represent rep-resent a net gain in the farm income without increasing the farm overhead, he advised. Many low-income farmers have found that this addition means the difference between farming at a loss and a profitable year, he added. "A still more important benefit bene-fit however, is the type of diet which these foods make possible. Milk and eggs particularly contain con-tain the elements which are essential es-sential to full physical vigor. Their use in sufficient quantities will enable members of the family fam-ily to stand off disease and work more efficiently during time of emergency," Mr. Nebeker pointed out. |
