Show Mattress Program Gets Under Way, Service Reports Organization of committees for launching a cotton-mattress program pro-gram in Utah, under the supervision super-vision of the USDA and affiliated agencies, is being completed la several counties of the state, according to Miss Myrtle Davidson assistant director of toe Utah Extension Ex-tension Service. Under the project, surplus cotton cot-ton from the South will be used to make mattresses for low-income families throughout the state and nation. The project is being sponsored spon-sored in Utah by the USAC Extension Ex-tension service, the AAA, and Surplus Marketing Corporation. Designed to be a self-help project, pro-ject, rather than a relief measure, meas-ure, the mattress program has been put into action in Cache, Box Elder, Morgan, Summitt, Salt Lake, Utah and Millard counties. Plans for complete organizations nother counties will be completed by the end of March, according to schedules released by Miss Davidson. Those whose names are not on the approved list to receive materials ma-terials for mattress-making, should apply to the home demonstration agent in thefr county, or if there is no such official, they should apply to the county agricultural agent. Those in the FSA should go to their farm supervisor first, because there is a small charge for superrision and equipment. Welfare groups will have no precedence over other groups of applicants, and all work will be done by those applying for the mattress material. Eight hundred fifty bales of cotton, cot-ton, enough to make 8010 mattresses mat-tresses in the state, is the estimated esti-mated amount that will be required, re-quired, reports the AAA, one of the sponsors of the program, in making request for this material from the central off'-e of the USDA at Washington D. C. Training schools will be held throughout the state, under the direction of the Extension Service, Ser-vice, to train mattress makers prior to the launching of the project within the counties. About 60 days are required to get materials ma-terials after applications are approved, ap-proved, officials announce.
