Show Richmond Fire Worst in History Damage caused by one of the worst fires in Richmond's history Wednesday night mounted to approximately ap-proximately $15,000 it was reported today after an inventory of the loss was completed Thursday. The fire, which started about 6 p. m., partially destroyed the Mon-son Mon-son Lumber company, warehouse i and store and considerable lumber ' stored in the yard. Damage was estimated &t about $8000 which was almost entirely covered by insurance, according to E. S. Laurence, Lau-rence, chief of the Logan-Cache fire department. The lumber yard is owned by Mrs. Brigham C. Monson and managed by her son. B. C. Monson. The blaze started in the barn owned by Guy E. Merrill, which is Just south of the lumber yard. The building was totally destroyed, along with farm equipment and harnesses. More than 65 tons of hay were either burned or ruined, 500 bushels of grain burned, and eight purebred holstein cows, 970 hens and 169 pullets were burned to death. The fire apparently was started by the careless deposition of a cigarette or matches by a passerby, passer-by, Chief Laurence said. It started start-ed in a corner of the barn and spread quickly to the dry hay, anc burning cinders ignited the adjoining ad-joining lumber yard. Sparks also ignited the room of the A. L. Harris bam about one-block north of the Merrill barn, but little damage resulted. Two companies of the Logan-Cache Logan-Cache fire department and a volunteer vol-unteer company from Richmond battled the blames for more than six hours. It was the worst fire in Cache county this year, Chief Laurence said. |
