Show PiO.iEER DAY. h four h of July is celelrateti all over th country as tiie dav ot Auierics-n irt'lependenre, and a glorious day it is. How all men'-hearts men'-hearts swell with ptide and fire up with patriotism at th-j mention of the most glorious of all days, the fjvjrtb of July ! Here in Utah it is just as important, just as sacred, as cnywhere in the country. There is another day that the people of Utah hold almost as dear; it is to them what the landing of the Pilgrim Pil-grim fathers is to the people of JNew England. On that day they celebrate the anniversary of the arrival of the pioneers in Salt Lake valley, on that day they make manifest their thankfulness to tne Lord fjr His goodness to tnem in guiding the footsteps of the people t a valley where they would be free to worship God according to the dictates of their conscience, without fear of interfeience. . We refer to Pioneer day. This day will have an important place in the hearts of all the people of Utah irrespective of creed or color, and on the pages of history. On that day a new era was opened to the world. These people came to this country and built a city when there was nothing but a snge brush wilderness, on either side of them, and through their efforts, it was possible to build a railroad across this tract of desert waste, and thus connect the Atlantic with the Pacific. They passed through hardship after hardship and many, who were not able to withstand ( - tke exposure, died. ' It is due almost entirely to the perseverance of these pioneers that Utah, is what she is to-day the leading territory of the Union, j Some people have au idea that it is strictly a "Mormon day." Such, however, is not the case, it a day that should be celebrated by all of Utah's people, as the day when the foundation was laid for the building of the great common wealth that Utah is to-day. It should be celebrated by all of Utah's citizens as the d.iy upoi. which the first permanent settle mem was made in the territory and the day on which the first tr;iin was sown west of the ocky moun-tains. moun-tains. Let us not celebrate this d 1 y only as a day upon whicn tlii country wu firsi sett'ed but aW to keep fresh in our memories those brave pioneers, who first hoisted the stars and stripes upon Ensign peak We are pleas-ed to leim that Manti will celebrate in a manner man-ner befitting the occasion. All societies and denominations are in-rited in-rited to participate, and there wili be a display, the equal of which waB never before seen in Sanpete county. |
