The city council met in regular; session ses-sion Monday evening, Mayor Shoemaker presiding. v Prayer by Councilor AndeTson. At roll call the only abserrtess were Munk and, Luke who came in afterwards- Minutes of the three previous meeting meet-ing were read corrected and approved. The Mayor slated that the first business busi-ness was the hearing of petitions but as some gentlemen are present who may have somfi business with the council, we will first see what it is. One of the gentlemen stepped forward and presented a claim which was held over to come" up in its regular order. PETETIONS, The first item under this head was a petition from Mrs. Ann Barton for the remittance of city and water tax, trenches amounting to $1465 was presented pre-sented Munk moved that the claim be allowed. Carried. Justice Judd presented a claim for 4.30 balance due on Ihe expense of a trial. Bessey moved that someone be a,, pointed to escort .Mrs. Schougaard to the council chamber, to hear the reading read-ing of the justice's report, but could get no second. ' The claim of the committee on waterworks water-works for labor at various times, amount-ng amount-ng in all to $20.55 ivas allowed. The cla m of Nels Jensen and P. C. Larsen amounting to $100.00 was presented. pre-sented. Wintch moved that the claim be allowed. al-lowed. Reid amended the inotion by moving that the bill be referred to Councilor Luke as chairman of the waterworks committee. , The amendment prevailed. The claim of supeivisor W. A. Cox amounting to $8.50 was referred back to the supervisor for correction. The claim of VV. A Cox of $2 65 was allowed. The claim ot Felt & Gregory of $1.25 for printing was allowed. Marshal Snow stated that he had sent for four po'ice badges, they had arrived and cost him $3.00 and he wanted to know if he or the city was to pay the amount. Ou motion of Reid $3.00 was appropriated appro-priated to pay for the badges. Councilor Luke said thatithe school trustees had asked permission to use the north and upper rooms for school purposes, On motion of Reid the matter was postponed until the next regular meeting; meet-ing; - On motion, the council adjourned sine die, i 5 Benediction bv Councilor Munk, Councilor Bessey moved that $5.00 be appropriated to pay a portion of the taxes, Carried. -. 1 Mrs- Sophia Smith petitioned lor 'the remittance of her taxes amounting to $9.60. On motion of Wintch $500 was appropriated ap-propriated to aid paying the said taxes. A petition from Augusta and Caroline Snow asking to be allowed to use water from the hydrant of Belle Weilbye free of charge, was on motion of Anderson granted for the period of six months. A petition from Emma Bird askiag that her taxes amounting to $7,50 be re- mitted, was read and on motion of Reid th nciiM -fle ariprnrtriaterl Mrs. Scougaard presented a verbal petition asking that she be allowed the the pnvelege of selling icecream, soda water, etc. on Sunday. The mayor read a section of an ordinance ordin-ance which prohibited the selling or givimg away of any article except medicine medi-cine on the Sabbath. Mrs. Schougaard then made a speech in support of her petition, saying she thought that if Ihe matter was looked upon with regard to godliness it was no worse to sell ice eream than to run races on main street or to keep a livery staple open on Sunday. She also slated that if her store was closed on Sunday the principal portion of her business would bt gone. She depended on her Sunday trade to keep her business go. ing and if she loi her business she she would lose her means of obtaining a living for herself and child. On motion of Councilor Reid the matter was refered to the city attorney attor-ney and the committee on laws and divisions with authoniy to frame an amendment and report at the next regular meeting. There being no reports from city officers offic-ers the hearing of the reports of the various committees was declared the order of business. Cox from the committee on irrigation reported that seven trees on the sidewalk side-walk in front of Mr. Witbeck's had been damaged by the scraper while grading the street. He estimated the damage at &.20 and recommended that amount be paid Mr. Witbeck. Wintch moved that the teport be accepted ac-cepted and recommendation adopted. Carried. Bessey moved that .the bill of Wit-beck Wit-beck for damages to trees be allowed. Carried Reid stated that the auditing committee com-mittee was not ready to report. The matter of the compensation of the assessor and collector for extra work in assessing and collecting the special water tax came up under the head of unfinished business. x?eid moved that the assessor and collector col-lector bs allowed 7 mills on the dollar for assessing and collecting said tax and for furnishing cards, forms, etc. Carried. MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS. The recorder read a communication from David James asking for a remitt-tance. remitt-tance. On motion of Anderson the communication communi-cation was referred to tne committee on waterworks with power to act. CLAIMS. Peter H. Moler and Peter Block pre. sented a claim far labor amounting to $148.68 and asked that they be allowed a part thereof.
