Show daisy has lunch at school says it s swell by daisy crouch the story of the loaves an and d fishes has always fascinated me may maybe be because the subject of foo food d is always an interesting one and I 1 thought the days of miracles were passed but I 1 witnessed witnessed witness eq one last friday when I 1 was invited to be the guest of mrs airs grace graham at the school luncheon I 1 saw the miracle of students served a wholesome satisfying dinner in one hour one hour from the time the littlest ones come to the tables to the time the last group the band members were served all signs of a meal were cleared away I 1 marvelled marvellee marvel led at the ease and dexterity with which this group of youngsters was taken care of and could see that the training received in the school along with the cooperation of the school personnel and the women in charge of the school lunch was the secret of it all first to tell you what we had for lunch there was vas a generous helping of fluffy mashed potatoes smothered hered with cubes of tender beef in a rich smooth g gravy r avy a slice of tomato and a bread and butter sandwich one slice being whole wheat and the other white bread a scoop of ice cream and a battla of orangeade the menus differ each day and only on fridays is ice cream served and milk mostly takes the place of the orangeade the selection and purchase of foodstuffs is taken care of by mrs airs E and the fruits and vegetables used are canned by the women in the canning center in morgan twelve groups march in from the elementary school each grade being divided into two classes and having a teacher each the first graders are marched in first and they are the only ones to sit at a set table the other groups coming in five minutes apart march to the window and are served cafeteria style after eating each one bakes takes his plate back to the receiving win window where the woman stationed there scrapes and piles the dishes ready for the dishwashers 1 I sat doe cloe to this window and was thrilled to see that the plates with few exceptions were returned cleaned of food showing that the meal had bad been enjoyed after a while I 1 visited the kitchen there are eight women there each assigned to certain work and each one always at her station five girls assist in the d dishwashing and it is teamwork and organization tion under good leadership that makes things run so smoothly I 1 asked to see what was left after the he students had been served and it t seemed there was just about enough food left for the women workers then I 1 asked to see how much waste there was after such a meal and was gratified to see there were only two dishpans dish pans ans half full of scraps I 1 watched the groups as they were enjoying the meal and to my inexperienced eyes could see no signs of malnutrition among any of them everything was orderly and very interesting and I 1 wished that every parent would visit the school during this period only then could they get any idea of the magnitude of the job and they certainly would appreciate the work the teachers and the lunch committee are doing with the students the history of the school ill lunches riches dates back to nearly ten ye years ars ago when a handfuls hand full of relief society women would make a kettle full of good nourishing soup and take it to the various schools the children then were expected to bring their own sandwiches later a few women were paid a small sum by the government and it was a small sum indeed to prepare the school lunch this would cost the children about six cents a week the government would not allow any money to be collected in the schools and the 27 women of the county canvassed the community for the money in advance so that every child could have a hot snack at noon and no child was ever turned away mrs airs eliza ulrich was instrumental in ill organizing the first PTA P TA in morgan and was president of the association when the school lunch became an established activity with mrs airs sophia anderson andersen 1 chairman of the lunch corn com nit itee te e much good we work r k was commenced prom from 10 cents a week the price was raised to 15 cents and now with the high cost of living the students pay 75 cents a week or 15 cents a meal with government ment aid the ae price is within the reach of of every child and where would anyone be able to ao buy a meal as is served at school for 15 cents we in morgan are indeed blessed with all the good things of life with fine schools splendid leaders may we be ever appreciative of these blessings |
