Show a BUREAU EDITORS EDITO RS NOTE this newspaper through special arrangement with the bureau of IF estern newspaper union at 1616 eye street N W r re washington mashington D C is il able to br bring in g readers a d this weekly column on problems of the veteran and serviceman sert iceman and his family questions may b be c addressed to the abote bureau and they will be answered in a subsequent column no replies r can he be made direct by mail but ut only in n the column which will appear appeal in this newspaper regularly disability insurance recent legislation has authorized veterans administration to insure veterans who carry national service life insurance against total disability upon application proof of good health and payment of an extra premium premium rates tor for the disability coverage range from six cents to 94 cents a month per 1000 of insurance su depending upon the ahe in shreds age and type of 0 policy disability benefits are at the rate of 5 a month for each 1000 of insurance and are payable after the veteran has been totally disabled continuously for six months or more monthly benefits will continue to be I 1 paid as long as the insured remains totally disabled however the disability must commence before the veterans birthday one of the principal features of the new disability benefit VA officials say is that the face value of the veterans policy will not be reduced by any disability payments he might receive c e iv e veterans V t e r a n s with h service s e r v i c et con c 0 nal re ise wit necked e c t e d disabilities d a b i H t i e s less e s s than t h a n total 0 t in degree are not prevented from taking advantage of the new provision provided they apply tor for it before january 1 1950 in these cases such disabilities are waived it they are the only bar to meeting the health requirements i questions and answers Q I 1 am not satisfied with the discharge I 1 received from the army and because bebau se of the nature 0 of it I 1 have been turned down by the local board for readjustment compensation Is there any authority under which I 1 could get my discharge changed or corrected S A II 11 Si keston mo A yes under the 1944 service mens readjustment act itself there is a provision provis ion which establishes in the war navy and treasury departments respectively boards of review composed of of five members each whose duties shall be to review on their own motion or upon the request of a former officer or enlisted man or woman or if deceased by the surviving spouse next of kin or legal representative the type and nature of a discharge or dismissal except a discharge or dismissal by reason of the sentence of a general court martial such review shall be based upon all available records of the service department relating to the person requesting such review and such other evidence as may be presented by the person suggest you contact your nearest veterans administration office for consultation as to filing your application for reviews review it if you desire Q I 1 see in your column that you say many loans are arc being made to GIs I 1 would like to know how bow they get them for I 1 am a GJ GI and have two years service with necessary qualifications and everything I 1 have tried every way I 1 know to get a home loan and because I 1 dont have over halt half the money to pay down I 1 can find no one who will grant me a loan nave llave you anything to suggest that will help me it F P winchester ind A yes there are many GIs obtaining home loans under the GI bill of rights more than of them to date dace however the law puts the question of making the loan directly up to the local lender and so the loan must be granted by your local bank building and loan association or other lender before VA can approve the guaranty it if you want a small farm you might try the farmers home administration in your own or adjoining county Q I 1 am writing to see if I 1 can farid out why I 1 received my bonds I 1 went into service on april 27 1945 1 I re enlisted on november 27 1945 and after I 1 went overseas I 1 received only three bonds two 10 bonds and one 25 bond and I 1 want some information what to do about it and chere to write 1 C F gurley ala A if you are still in service consult your commanding officer or company finance officer if you have been discharged and the money for the bonds was regularly taken from your pay write to bond division U S army goodfellow blvd st louis 20 mo and give them all details of your purchase Q it if a soldier goes AWOL and is put in the guardhouse will he receive the benefit of the GI bill of rights and will he get an honorable discharge A 13 G oklahoma city okla A it depends entirely upon whether he receives a general court martial or whether he merits a discharge other than dishonorable bable the mere tact fact that he was AWOL does not necessarily mean that he will get a dishonorable discharge each case is judged upon its merits his commanding officer must decide |
