| Show national state leaders extend greetings on newspaper week oct 18 1 8 president truman heads list of officials sending messages to the public in observance of wea week oct 18 1 8 THE WHITE HOUSE washington D C it is a pleasure to me again to salute the press of the united states on the occasion of national newspaper week the newspapers of the nation did a magnificent job during the war they threw their full support behind the campaign to salvage and collect needed war materials they were in the fore front of every drive lor for the sale of war stamps and bonds they reported the war admirably operating un under der a voluntary code of they strengthened the censorship chit spirit P of the people at home and the morale of the fighting forces abroad in the words of your slogan our press is is the voice of freedom guardian of liberty upon it now rests a tremendous share hare of the responsibility for solving the problems of peace I 1 know well that this responsibility will be met in full HARRY S TRUMAN president of the united states in the early colonial days john peter the editor in the colonies was forced to fight for his right to comment in his weekly journal journal upon the acts of the governor with alexander hamilton as his attorney the case was won and the freedom of the press established english editors for more diore than a hundred years had attempted to gain that ground but without success thus we see a new freedom established many years before the constitution of the united tates was written this had its bearing in the wording of the first amendment which provided for freedom of speech the press religion and assembly no time in history have the editors of the weekly semiweekly and small daily newspapers been faced with so great a ibi lity social upheavals the result of the war have brought to the surface many isms iams few of which reflect the american way of life to combat these will require the united efforts of editors in the maller mailer communities of these united states here we find the true foundations of our democracy where straight thinking and the application of horse sense are arc in every day use falig fale doctrines and panaceas do not squire with sound government nor the preservations of free enterprise antei prise the task of continuing the fight for or the american way of life falls upon the so called country editor and with his community behind him he can and will lead this nation to new and greater heights our fa forefathers r ef athers left the plow stand in the field to fight for the freedoms we enjoy no such price is asked if us only that we stand four square in defense of those rights FRED W HILL president t national editorial association freedom of press was written into the bill of rights by the frames of the constitution it is written indelibly in the heart of every american A free press is certainly the first and foremost guarantee of freedom of thought and expression it is one of the fundamental freedoms to defend for which e have fought alk al lur r wars it must be preserved inviolate if democracy is to endure because we have had a free press we have had bad a great press out of the right to lay ay what we want has grown the power to say it forcefully and effectively the american press is without rival in the world our great fleat daily papers the thousands of i home borne town weekly newspapers ur incomparable news services the efficiency and honesty of A iier me ican ricart journalism have made it possible for the masses of the people to participate in great events to be mell ell informed spectators of history tory in the making we cannot he be paralyzed by propaganda or lathered into hysteria by self seek tn rs so go long as the traditions of A Ine bencan rican journalism are maintain ed w we the people can make our own dei decisions s ions in the light of cor ct information or mation certainly the american newspaper is is one of our greatest public servants it is a high eh honor to be asked asked to pay tribute to the amer american can press during national newspaper alper week and I 1 think it would be a a helpful healthy thing wig if all americans would mould join in the recognition of national newspaper ws paper week by recalling the inestimable ncE benefits which flow now to all an of us from a free and nt ht press SENATOR ABE MURDOCK once again on this the sixth anual nual ob observance observant ce of national news caper dweck lute week it is a pleasure to saw the men and women of the wees press of utah newspapers you have e done a magnificent job dur ing the war your support of worthy campaigns and military activities tivi ties resounds with credit upon you your voluntary censorship your admirably fair reporting of the war reflects the love and support you have for your representative government the press is truly the voice of freedom guardian aar of democracy HERBERT B MAW governor |
