Show AIRPLANE CRASH NEAR COALVILLE KILLS TWO the pilot and one of six passengers in a motored trl private airplane were IJ killed aled 8 aday when the machine crashed crasham 14 miles aas east of coalville Co alville in a held field on the elmer staley ranch in chalk creek canyon the dead are william R duck aa manager of the duck airplane service company oakland cal and C J gardiner 37 of south par len In avenue Avenue chicago ill mr duck who had purchased the ship in chicago and was crul cruising sing to his home in oakland was pinned in wreckage behind the planes controls and instantly killed he was a veteran pilot having had more mare than 12 years as a private flier filer and also several years work with the U 8 forbat service as a pilot mr gardiner seated beside M duck in the plane died en route rout ti to an ogden hospital where hs he was to have been treated for fractured legs a broken jaw and internal injuries j I 1 survivors none critically injured included the wives of both men another couple mr and mrs R T sullivan both about 40 of oak park ill and the daughter of the cardl ner couple carol ann gardiner 4 3 mrs duck who suffered cuts and bruises remained in Co alville for treatment but the others in the 3 party were taken to ogden mrs sullivan was treated there at the dee memorial hospital for cuts and bruises but her companions did not require hospitalization so slight were their injuries the mishap ended a vacation trip for the party all of whom were formerly acquainted when the gar diners and sullivans lived in oakland mr sullivan and mrs gardiner both employed by the jenson radio manufacturing company of chicago had planned to return to illinois later with their families by train an unsuccessful attempt to make a forced landing in a field adjoining chalk creek approximately three miles east of upton preceded the mishap although the huge black ship struck the field with two wheels it bounced nearly yards struck several trees and with its left wing 0 sheared off crashed squarely in the th 0 middle midd leof of shallow chalk creek bounded endwise and came to rest in thick underbrush on the opposite side af pf the creek bank mr sullivan described the accident as follows we left chicago sunday at a m and cheyenne wyo at p m we were flying at about feet wl ihrl i noticed we were having trouble the pilot started circling around and I 1 thought w were going to land at an emergency mtr gency field so BO t f told the ladles to fasten their safety belts we landed with two wheels and then evidently he thought he could not make a safe landing so he gunned it the ship went up and down hitting the tops of some trees then we and I 1 dont recall much of what happened after af ter that one wing of the plane an eight passenger cabin model mode was wrecked ane ne was ns birg thrown wn approximately 10 feet ana 4 the other two were badly smashed the ne and tall were left eff neary intact TWO ks k s wha attempted flag the fhe pilot to a safe landing altar after they heard the motors mi ario and saw the machine circle were edward powell and harold saxton of upton upon the coroners jury found that no neglect was evidenced as responsible tor for the accident and blamed the crash on an undetermined type of motor trouble officials in charge of the investigation of the smashup smash up were elmen bagnell deputy sheriff of summit county and al clarke state highway patrolman br r 9 W french of the he ard and W H dunn of 6 Co alville assists ass lead d vath the investigation jacl qt gf acted acte a ag clerk tor for the coroners lury jury which was composed of the following all of upton vern Dern ming W H macrum david clark walter clark claric and erastus Tru lello mountain states fuel cuddly co workers directed by IT C alken aiken of Co coalville alville helped remove ase from the wrecked ship and guarded it from more than persons who thronged thron ged to the scene |
