Show the abundant life EDITORS NOTE the following address was delivered by paul H hunt last evening at over mr hunt Is one of summit countes coun tys most prominent citizens highly re specter p acted and well known the state and we we feel fee 1 suie that his message will be read with a great deal of interest by our large family of readers listeners will recall that six years ago this fall we were intrigued by promises of a more abundant life for everyone there were many other promises made at this time most of which have long since been broken and forgotten we will confine ourselves to this one ona promise this promise of the more abundant life was accepted at face value by the majority of the people of this country it was attractive because we all believe it possible with our wealth of natural resources with our owned conditions with no enemies on our borders or in the western hemisphere with an energetic people with our schools churches and societies there are no reasons whatever why the amerlean american people should not lead the world in social and material progress not only do we generally realize that a more abundant life for everyone in this country is possible but we know that we have demonstrated by our experience that we can steadily improve our standard of living for the fifty years prior to 1929 the average standard of living of the people of this country improved at a compound rate of nearly 3 per cent a byear year this means that in fifty years yean our average standard of living improved fourfold four fold so the majority of us believed this promise of the in more ore abundant life now let us check up and see how well this promise has been kept for 52 years the present administration has had a tree free hand to I 1 test all its theories they have had the support of congress to do as they would up to within the past year when many democratic statesmen have drawn back in forroi when they fully realized the abyss towards which we have been heading they have had unlimited amounts of money to spend expenditures of government have been enormous and in to the huge sums spent from taxes they have spent 21 billion dollars of future generations if we take the gross value or of what we produced in 1929 in the united states as this year we will duce about 64 per cent as much meanwhile our population has increased by nearly ten per cent so our per capita production is about 58 per cent of the gross value of 1929 which is only slightly more than it was in the depths of the world depression six years ago it if we figure in this 21 billion dollars of our childrens money which the new deal has spent we have in reality gone behind we are worse of off f today by far than we were years ago when the new deal took charge and promised everyone the more abundant life now let us examine what the other nations have done since the eppig in 1932 in swed sweden en it if we take the gross value of their production in 1929 as last year in 1937 the gross value of their production was aa or nearly 50 per cent greater and in addition sweden has reduced her national debt in the past six years in britian last year the gross value of their production was 22 per cent greater than in 1929 in germany 16 per cent greater in italy 14 per cent greater in canada 18 per cent greater the statistics of the league of nations show that of the 25 leading nations of the world the united states is last in the amount of recovery it has made since the depths ot of the world depression in 1932 comparing ourselves with our neigh bor to the north canada taking as the base for 1929 for both countries their production Is now I 18 and ours 64 but it is not necessary to give statistics to show that we have made no progress towards that goal of the more abundant life which was dangled before our eyes six years ago everyone of you listeners know that you an and d your family are worse off it matter whether you are a miner a worker in the trades a railway man a clerk a teacher a professional man or business man no one has prospered everyone is deeper in debt and the outlook for the future of yourself and your family Is gloomier than it was 5 years ago in view of all this it is therefore a shocking and astonishing thing that the junior senator from utah I 1 should return from washington and boisterously shout that the new deal has not made a single mistake I 1 and that if reelected re elected he will continue to support the same policies in the future that he has in I 1 the past this would simply ay be ludicrous it if it were not so tragic it if our junior senator really believes this he is singularly unobserving and unsympathetic can he believe this when he looks on the everin ever in creasing numbers of men working on W P A for 1000 a week has he any conception of the tragic misery of a father and mother who must house clothe and feed and care tor for their children and themselves on 1000 a week if we take this statement at its face value then we can expect the man on relief will continue on relief the small business man and the farmer will continue to slip I 1 deeper and deeper into debt the professional man will have fewer paying patients and clients the man now working either on a salary or on days pay will dread more and more the coming of the last of the I 1 continued on page paga 4 J the fhe abundant life continued from first page week or the last of the month for tear fear that he will be the next to be bayed off botti both our two congressmen and our junior senator have been more interested in their political futures than they have in the welfare of the deop people le of utah whom they supposedly represented and have mistakenly believed that ill all they nee needed ded to do to insure this political future was to get more relief appropriations riat ions to care for those who h had ad lost their jobs they have not looked beyond this they seemingly seen have not realized that a large part of tills this new deal legislation for which they so blindly voted Is the real cause for so many men be being ing out of jobs and requiring so much relief money our legislators seem to take the attitude that they deserve deerve the full support of those whose jobs at 2500 or more a week they have destroyed if in return they give them a job on the W P A at 1000 a week the new deal Is a cold blooded calculated plan to continue their rule by tear fear and intimidation timi dation of those their unsounded economic and social theories have forced upon relief As long as they can call get people to believe their propaganda that if the republicans are elected to office they wll cut off everyone from relief and permit them to starve just so long will the united states continue in his nightmare of depression let me make our position very clear as to this the republican party stands for relief when and where relief Is necessary the distinction and difference is this we think relief is a curse because it aps initiative mild and Is a bare sub il istance stance living and we do not believe eve in subsistence living for anyone people living at a bare subsistence si level are injuring themselves and our entire economic structure if in times of world panic and depression relief is necessary then republicans will go to any limits to supply the funds for such relief but we will do more than this we will do our utmost to create jobs at twice or three times what Is I 1 paid in relief the new dealers have a pet piece f propaganda thea the use on every occasion this Is that the republican party has no constructive pol cy the great fault of republicans has been that we are too much engrossed in constructive policies we have always been chiefly concerned in protecting the rights of the individual protecting him against the tyranny of his own government and against the tyranny of groups that would try and dominate and restrict his freedom both the republican and democratic parties are necessary for well balanced progress in this country the new deal is a party that has sprung up without fixed principles or policies it Is a creature of the moment a passing phase in our life and only held together by the lust for political power and profits the new deal has violated the sound econ amic principles of the republican party and the principles of the rights of the individual of abi th democratic party it attempts to survive by the fear of purges and in and by tricking us into lie he belief that by squandering the thel noney money of future generations in pump priming they are restoring real prosperity the slogan of the republican party is lets put america back to work this has been the policy pursued by all the other count countries arles of the world in making their remarkable recoveries since the depths of the world depression it Is the policy adopted by sweden and sweden is now producing nearly 50 per percent cent more in m value than she did in the prosperous year of 1929 the standard of living in sweden is higher than it has ever been and corresponds to the value of their per ca capita p production I 1 might add that tha t the scale of wages in that country Is is 20 per cent higher than it was in 1929 there lj la no great mystery in getting men back to work otter after a prolonged depression it has been done in this country a number of times i it has been done in many foreign countries in the past few years it Is simply a matter of assuring business and meaning it that they will be encouraged to go ahead and will be protected in all their legitimate endeavors the new deal and its spokesmen have venomously and continually held up all business little and big to ridicule le and derision their legislation lias has been drafted not for the purposes purposes of raising revenue or for proper regulation of business but to hamper and obstruct ruA and destroy business and the result has been as you I 1 I 1 all know that money has heaped up in n our hands not daring to venture forth there never has been such reserves of capital and credit anxious to go to work but afraid we never had such reserves of men anxious to go to work we have an accumulated amount of deferred construction for the past six years which would give full employment for four years for all those in these 1 i industries one job in productive industry industry y creates another job for the man producing the raw material more jobs in transporting it more jobs in distributing and selling the fin I 1 1 dished product these new jobs in productive industry create greater purchasing power which again creates more jobs to satisfy these I 1 additional demands when you have i all these necessary factors poten I 1 bial needs labor money and raw material as we have in this county today the stage is set for a great revival of business and prosperity tor for all there is only one little thing hingl needed to start this thi s industrial I 1 machine rolling and that little thing is confidence confluence confidence plays about the same part in our industrial machine that spark plugs play in the operation of an automobile spark plugs are not a conspicuous part of an automobile but j you cannot run a car without them i I 1 the abys smal ignorance of business by the new deal leaders ignorant because most of them have never been engaged in any productive industry Is the reason why they hate business they have believed they could gain cheap political power by attacking business and and in doing so if permitted to contin ue they will bring on national bankruptcy and economic chaos it must be apparent that a change is necessary the beginnings of an upturn in business we see today are in anticipation of this change democrats and republicans alike are combining to bring it about t I 1 americas place in the race of progress is not trailing the field of 25 starters as we have been doing for 52 years we should be way OUT out in front leading the field leading in social progress in care tor for children the aged and unfortunate leading in ill ahe the highest standards of living and in everything tha that makes life worth while r you can help bring this change about by voting republican publican Be on novi ember ath you owe this to youri your family and your community summit county bee |
