Show county miners M m ers organize contact coal commission following the action taken by the trade commission ot of utah on sept 20 to cooperate in rempei reopening aing the mines near Co coalville Coal alville vUle the coal miners of summit county in district 3 met and organized on se september pt ember 29 following Is their letter to D C ashmead director of statistics ot of the national bituminous coal commission in salt lake city dear sir for the last three years and one month the largest coal mines in summit county have been closed down by rules and regulations entirely beyond the management of the mines this has thrown between 65 and men out ot of work at a time when it would seem that men should have been encouraged to get work these men and coal vule ville the county seat of summit county were largely dependent on these mines for work in fact the community has been built up on this basis many of these men have suffered along and the business I 1 men of the community have aled along as best they could the men in many cases being entirely de dependent t on relief it has changed I 1 the whole attitude and outlook out look on life of many of these people these rules and regulations were nothing more than shortsighted short sighted unfair and unjust to this community put ef effect feet over our protests and explanations of their effect now it is understood that rules and an d regulations more fair and better fitted to the mining industry of this community have been made the men who were put out ot of work want to get back on the job and live by their own efforts to this end the coal minery miners of summit county in district no 3 met ai at Co coalville alville on the of se september and organized as a body under unde r the name ot of summit county coal miners with frank H hobson as president and vern gunn as secretary the organization appointed a scale committee consisting of frank H hobson andrew hobson and elwin bagnell the miners agreed to take a basic inside minimum tini wage of per day and 65 cents per ton for mining milling coal in coalville Co alville and vicinity t there here lias has been a federal road project on which many of the men have found some work this work however is now about at an end when this work Is over there Is nothing here to do and one hates to contemn contemplate late what the suffering will be the miners have asked the man I 1 I 1 j argement to try and get the market back and open up again these mines it is hoped that your honorable commission will do all in its power thesel to aid the management of these mines and the men here to get started again to get back the mar i 1 kete which were lost and thereby put this community on a self sup porting and respecting toasts basis respectfully summit county coal miners by FRANK H HOBSON N president I 1 attest VERN GUNN secretary summit county bee |
