Show RADIO ROBOTS TO FORETELL WEATHER i new system of upper air exploration Is I 1 planned I 1 washington cold waves bound for the united states from the north pole next winter will be reported several days ahead of their arrival under plans for a new system of upper air exploration announced by the weather bureau two upper air exploration sta stations eions would be established bone at burbank calif and the other at fair banks alaska in september dr i W nu R acer gregg egg chief of the bureau a announced n d R radio a dio robot weather observers that broadcast their findings f from rom far above the earth to observers on the ground will be released daily with balloons at these two stations the fairbanks station will enable meteorologists to forecast several days earlier than heretofore the approach of a cold wave the burbank station will provide upper air weather news for forecasters all over the country the radio promises to remove one of the greatest handicaps to weather forecasting the world ever aver the dearth of up to the minute information on the conditions in the upper air on which to base forecasts dr gregg said the radio consists of a min wireless set which broadb broadcasts ats the response made by three elements sensitive to atmospheric changes attached to each element one responsive to pressure c changes anges one to temperature changes and one to humidity changes is a tiny hand which moves as the element moves A fourth small hand kept in motion by a special clockwork passes over the three other hands making contact as it goes at each contact I 1 a signal is broadcast A receiving set at the ground station picks it up trained observers translate the time intervals between the contacts caused by changing atmospheric conditions and the regular contacts I 1 of the moving arm with fixed points I into pressure humidity and temperature I 1 readings the radio observations from burbank and fairbanks going out by radio and teletype will reach forecast centers and airports almost as soon as they are taken the reports would be invaluable to aviators and especially those flying the northern regions dr gregg vaid caid they will also enable the bureau to forecast sooner and much more accurately weather conditions for general purposes |
