Show planting of trees will increase value of morgan county farms A well planted woodlot of forest trees would increase the value of every morgan county farm and would provide benefits in the form of fu elwood material according to paul M dunn extension forester of the agricultural college who has been studying tree conditions in the county recently in company with C R richards county agricultural agent most every farm has some small area of from 31 acre or larger that could be put to good use growing farm timber said mr dunn trees planted with a six by six foot spacing would grow 1200 per acre or on a Y acre with occasional watering and cultivation for the first few years several of the recommended varieties would be up to good size in sixto six to ton ten years several of the morgan county farmers have planted small for w trees within they the y last years for the purpose purpose of bf wood lots G S heiner and francis bingham of morgan and G M sullivan of peterson planted a total of trees during 1931 and 1932 these trees were inspected by mr dunn and mr richards richarda and it was found that all but four are in full leaf in planting a woodlot some thought should be given to the purpose of the wood material if fuel wood only is desired the siberian elm carolina poplar or willow are very good as they will make rapid growth if given sufficient water especially with the last two named if wood for farm uses such as ev eners wagon tongues or reaches are also desired it is suggested that theasa the ash black locust or honey locust be planted the black locust is also very durable and will last from 40 to 60 years in the venceline fen celine with good treatment the locust should grow to produce posts posta in from eight to ten years after planting A forest tree planting could also take the form of a combination woodlot and windbreak by planting four or more rows of trees along the windward side of the property and chining them out as they increase in size to provide wood material and leave the main body for protection young forest trees for planting may be obtained by farmers from the forestry department of afu ofu U S A C G at logan tit at to per hundred orders for 1933 planting should be received soon after the first of february mr richards will be able to supply additional information |
