Show DUE TO organization gratifying success in struggles for rights right and principles made pos po sible only by the putting forth of united strength importance of the part which T TUB organized labor plays in strikes Is made evident by statistics issued by the department of com borca and labor the report extends oter drw a period of 25 years and shows that of the total number of strikes during that period no less than 69 per ce cent at vere ordered by organized labor not only did tho the workers order the tha larger percentage of strikes but they also alao succeeded in making a good showing in 48 49 per cent ot of the cases they won all the demands they made in 16 15 per cent they were partially partial lk successful and in 36 per cent filled failed to gain a point in the matter of at lockouts on an tho the other band the employers were successful 11 cess ful la in moro more than 57 per cent of the establishments involved the employers came out with flying colors winning decisive victories in 11 per cent they were partially successful and only failed in 32 per cent of tho the cases these statistics and others contained in the report aro are being used ns as strong arguments in favor of organization because in 56 per cent of the disagreements where there was waa no union the strikers were ignominiously defeated being successful and then only in part dart in 43 per cent of these instances during tho the 25 years from 1883 to 1906 there were strikes and 1648 1546 lockouts in the the united states the tha total number who went on strike was nod and were locked out the dependence of one department upon the other however swells the total to who were idle during that period on account of industrial du disturbances increase of wages alone was the cause of 41 per cent of the strikes res and these were more mora successful than any an y others af more 0 re than 23 per cent we were reodie due to a d dispute as an to the recognition of union rules 12 per cent on account of the reduction in wages 10 per cent to enforce a shorter workday and 4 per cent on oa account of sympathy recognition of the union and of union rules proved the stumbling block in many cases and organized labor lost 43 per cent of the strikes ordered on this account sympathetic strikes were the most moat unsuccessful t 0 4 secretary of the newly crested department of 0 labor in the cabinet and tailed failed in 76 per par cent of the cases where this was the only cause advocates of arbitration as a means of settling these disputes claim that tho the statistics do not show the advance which this movement has made and the compilers of the report admit that in many cases this method had bad been adopted before a strike or lockout occurred less than 2 per cent were settled by this method while about 12 per cent of all strikes and lockouts were adjusted by resort to the joint agreement that a number of these strikes were wera of minor importance Is shown by the fact that the average duration of them per establishment was only 26 25 days though the lockouts extended on an average of sa 84 says days build building trades workers were apparently the most dissatisfied as they caused 26 per cent of all the strikes ordered |
