Show q i c ii Law Makers Give Report port House Notes By VANCE AAGARD House of Rc Representatives Member n From Sanpete o C-o County t Every week has been busy with the 1000 a am a.m. m to pm p.m. sessions being preceded by early morning committee meetings and followed by the same in the late afternoons This week the pressure has been on and with a calendar full of House and Senate bills to work on the House has really legislated Representative Glen Thurston Thurston Thurston Thurs Thurs- ton from Morgan who is not only an astute legislator but also a master teller story-teller and wit says that for every law they pass the Legislature should be compelled to repeal and take out of the statutes two existing laws Many of us wonder if he isn't right In the weeks week's action there was one proposal which I hated to see go down the drain This was HB which would have prevented any person firm corporation labor organization or union from coercing or intimidating its employees or members to pay contributions to any political political poli poll campaign Its opponents immediately labeled it an union anti bill but to my way of thinking it was a device for protecting every employees employee's job and affiliation af af- affiliation in the exercise of his freedom of choice In what turned out to be a party-line party vote the measure lost with a vote of 33 nos and 28 ayes A much better reception was given to HB 16 which shortens the campaign period for political campaigns with the view of reducing the time and money spent in the effort This passed with a wide margin mar mar- gin Of importance to our school districts was HB 34 This proposal proposal proposal pro pro- would have reduced from to the dollar size dollar size of building or remodeling remodeling remodeling re re- re- re modeling projects which could be undertaken by a school district without advertising for bids The bill was killed by bythe bythe bythe the vote so that the figure stands at Livestock men will b be happy for HB 93 which will require that all meat imported import import- ed from other countries and offered for sale within the state of Utah must be labeled as imported In Agriculture Committee meeting which gives both the proponents and opponents of a bill a chance chand to be heard before the bill is discussed a protest against the bill was made by the Canners Canners' Canners Canners Canners' Can Can- ners' ners Association but the measure was reported out favorably favorably far far- and was passed almost unanimously on the floor In other action on House Continued on page two From The Desk Of f Sen Rees STATE SENATOR The dictum of the King can do no wrong ong will be in inthe inthe inthe the limbo in the State of Utah after the Governor signs the Bill 4 4 There are certain certain certain tain exceptions but the old dictum is gone I voted against this bill twice for the reasons I gave in an earlier report A bill was drawn up to consolidate consolidate consolidate con con- the School Districts of Sanpete but now I believe this bill is not going to be introduced this session We Weare Weare Weare are operating very well well inthis in inthis inthis this county under the present arrangement and I believe such consolidation should be bedone bedone bedone done only if the people want it unless there is a marked savings in money and effic effic- Urban renewal legislation is being debated in the Senate Essentially this legislation would provide for a planning committee under tinder authority of the governing body of the area After public hearings any areas of slums including good areas within them could be leveled to the ground after using eminent domain to gain title to the land Then the theland theland theland land could be sold to private interests to build up if they would follow the master plan Federal funds could be obtained obtained obtained ob ob- to help finance the project Salt Lake City could receive two million dollars of federal funds for a project which is being considered I Iam Iam Iam am against this bill for three reasons In the first place it seems unwise to take private land by eminent domain and then sell it to private inter inter- ests In the second place I feel there are some things we should do for ourselves without without without with with- out federal funds In fairness it should be stated that the governing bodies can do the job without federal funds but if the federal federal federal fed fed- eral money is available my bet is that it will be used In Inthe Inthe Inthe the third place I am not sure the bill would be r House Bill passed the House and will I hope not be be lost to the sifting committee This is the bill which the dairymen are interested in I c i have received many letters on on this bill and want the senders to know I will support it t Enough for now i- i T.
