Show Two Huge Pines Planted in 1903 Two large Colorado Spruce pine trees were taken out this past week north of the home of Mr and Mrs Frank P. P Anderson Anderson Anderson An An- derson at the south end of Main Street The first tree to the north has been used as the town Christmas tree for more than 20 years It was over 65 feet high The second tree to the south of the Yule tree was more than 90 feet in height and its circumference circumference cir cir cir- at the base was 10 feet nine inches s. These trees were planted about 1905 by Beauregard Kenner Kenner Kenner Ken- Ken ner who brought them from the mountains in his saddle saddlebags saddlebags saddlebags bags when he was the Forest Ranger on the Manti ManU Forest Reserve Mr Kenner father of Mrs Anderson Mrs Ray Maude Ericson and Foster Kenner w was s one of the officials establishing establishing establishing es es- es- es national forests in southern Utah and in 1903 became became became be be- came the first forest ranger on the Manti Forest Reserve the first reserve established in the United States Later he helped establish national forests forests for for- ests in Sevier Garfield Iron and Millard Counties He was a personal friend of Gifford Pinchot then secretary sec sec- secretary rotary of Interior He was well known for his hunting ability and was sought as a guide for many hunting expeditions in this area when Utah was a territory He also was among the first to discover discover dis dis- dis cover coal in Salina SaUna Canyon He was a second cousin of Stephen Foster American composer For a number of years he be operated a sawmill in Manti ManU Canyon He came to Manti ManU with his parents in 1865 when his father fath fath- er was called by Brigham Young to be community phy phy- physician physician physician in Manti ManU Mr Kenner died at the age of 91 on Sept 4 4 1955 of causes incident to age The Andersons and Lyle Larsen in the midst of removing removing ing about 20 trees had high praise for the three men doing the work They said that Wallace Wallace Wal Wal- lace Tatton LaVar and Franz Huntsman had done an excellent excellent excel excel- lent job of taking down the trees |
