Show Letters to the Editor Dear Editor There are four lour major points that are of great concern to me meas 1 as I consider the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment 1 What guarantee do we have that any of the advantages stated by the proponents are arc going to t come about The Equal Pay law of 1962 Is a federal law The Civil Rights Act of 1964 J i is also a federal law If they are not effective what assurance assurance assur- assur assurance ance do we have that another federally controlled ERA act f will ERA do any better In obtaining the rights we want l I 2 If we have no need to ridiculous worry about the j i claims of the opponents as to the dangers in the ERA why were the protective clauses so forcefully removed three l times I would like to know just what is wrong with guaranteeing guaranteeing guar- guar that I will not LOSE any rights I now have Why does the ERA have to be pushed push- push I ed through without some safeguards safeguards safeguards safe safe- guards being added FIRST It I seems to me that prevention Is much easier than cure t 3 I strongly object to removing reI removing re- re moving jurisdiction from the I states to Congress We here in Utah have privileges and protection protection pro- pro that are not enjoyed in all other states Any of the Utah laws that do not coincide with the interpretation of ERA as the courts will decide later so how can we know that this will or wont won't happen will be declared unconstitutional I want a GUARANTEE that this will not happen 4 At the legislative hearing on the ERA a point not heretofore heretofore heretofore here- here mentioned by pros or cons of the bill was brought forcefully to mind Why Is there so much government government government govern govern- ment support In favor of the bill Why should my taxes be used to promote something I 1 Iam am very much opposed to If the proponents are entitled to government funds the opposition opposition opposition tion in all fairness should receive the same allocations Yes I know they claim that no one gets paid On the other hand there are many employees of state and federal government who take time during working hours to promote ERA Do they lose salary And what about the veritable mountain of literature literature literature liter liter- published at government expense to distribute all over the nation All this to say nothing nothing noth noth- ing of the just 1000 given to the Committee on the Status of Women from the Governors Governor's contingency fund for the promotion promotion promotion pro pro- motion of ERA What an unfair uphill battle any opposition has in trying to compete with arguments such as the Ithe Governors Governor's Committee supports this and ALL the women's organizations want this etc etc Couple that with huge amounts of favorable literature luncheons sponsored by the state paid for lor by whom from the Governor etc and we might well think What chance have we got Well It t Is uphill against al al- al most overwhelming odds but we weare weare are going to do our best to at least make it known that we will not take this without a fight We here In Utah possibly have more to lose than many other states and other states not yet having passed the ERA have letus let letus letus us know they are looking to us to help lead the way in defeating this We must not let ourselves or our sister states be railroaded railroaded railroaded rail rail- at government expense if we do not wholeheartedly support support support sup sup- port the ERA Merilyn Merllyn Jorgensen Dear Max My daughter pointed out tome to tome tome me your observations in the last Messenger concerning one of our basketball games It is only right for me to acknowledge your comments and say thanks-not thanks so much because of any personal compliment compliment com com- cast my way but rather to lend confirmation to your Insight into the true purpose of high school athletics Basketball is a wonderful game It can be a marvelous test of all the human qualities of character not least of which is control of anger There are times when all of us momentarily ily By lose perspective of the game and get carried away with its great emotional Impact But this doesn't mean we are right It means we have something to work for namely a more consistent action where behavior be behavior behavior be- be havior matches purposes and ideas As the years go by it be becomes becomes becomes be- be comes mor more apparent to me that athletics can be what we make them-a them forum to test the physical physical physical phys phys- ical and mental as a prelude to the challenges of later life or merely an end in and of Itself That end Is win or you are a failure In the eyes of many in the world In Dan Valentines Valentine's essay Dear World In which he Is Imploring the world to teach his son he says Teach him that there can be failure In victory and glory In defeat You have to think about this to receive its full impact Victory that teaches egotism self-cen- self and is perhaps perhaps perhaps per per- haps really failure in the long longrun longrun run whereas run whereas In defeat if one has given a full effort Is not jealous of his conqueror and again works to correct the causes of the loss then the defeated may well be the eventual winner Defeat is more morea a state of mind than what a score shows You may maybe be beaten but you should never feel de defeated defeated defeated de- de mentally if you did your best and best with high school athletes hinges on many vari vari- ables Welcome to our community I sincerely hope you and yours find rich rewards In terms of friendships peaceful living and those things a small community can best offer Sincerely Coach Wilbur Braithwaite |
