Show FOUNDING OF FILLMORE the first white man of record to have set toot foot in millard county was father escalante and his small par ty in 1776 he left a diary of his travels and a map no settlement was made by him and not until about 1851 do we find further mention of the whites who then came in a par tj t to scout the land and find a site for the territorial capital parley P pratt headed that ex tion the date given tor for this expedition before us as we write is in january 1850 a camp of mem bers of the party under david full mer while pratt went on to provo early in 1851 a company of M pi onders left salt lake city in search of a site that might be made the capital of the territory they reach ed the present site of fillmore in october 1851 the county was nam ed millard and the town fillmore in honor of president millard fill more the settlement was made by the side of chalk creek this was then about halt half way between the limits of the territory or a middle site for the capital anson call was the leader and later bishop readers of the history of the past will recall that he was bishop when the gunni son massacre occurred in 1853 A stockade was built and later a walled fort the indians around the region were Pah utes with their main camp at what is now kanosh chiefs kanosh and walker were friendly they lived in meager huts luts composed mostly of sage brush shelters or wicki ups of cedar boughs for the mid summer with more de bendable pen dable shelters at the main camp they used rabbit skin clothes tor for warmth in tall fall and winter tor for sum mer wear a gee string and a feath r they got game in surrounds re mains of which were seen by the early settlers near what is now hoi hot den archeological excavations near kanosh revealed that anciently the indians had walled houses of adobe one with an ancient kiva in it thus proving that back in time the in habitants were of the pueblo peo pie not utes |
