Show EDITOR SCOUTS POISON SPRING mr and mrs chas kelly took frank beckwith senior over to pol pot son spring wash the other side of hanksville Hanks ville over the week end kelly court stewart and I 1 had been there in 1933 hunting tor for one particular indian glyph described as an elephant seen by court by spicer and at a later date said to A to have been seen by bk dr inglesby Ing lebby to ind find it was our quest we drove the car into the wash got promptly stuck in the sand for there had been a violent storm only ten days or so before and washed the bed of the poison spring wash very badly the wave action having been in places as much as twelve feet above the wash bed this was the worst storm range riders had ever seen there it cut down to bed rock making our going very bad and baring every rock on the hot torn tom seeps that before were under a layer of sand were now fully ex posed and running water A spring down below that had been dry tor for years was now flowing a fairly good little stream every pot hole was lull full we walked hooted hoofed it rather and it was tough enough too at that twelve miles down the wash bed to the black jump a jump oft off where the wash drops feet in a halt half mile from where we stopped at the black jump we could see the far distant opposite wall of the fremont or dirty devil river some six or sev en miles away on the way down the wash we carefully searched tor for glyphs and teel feel we missed none we stopped and rat either drew or photographed each one found some of this we had done three years ago mentioning only some of the more important at poison spring biere tl ere Is a fine small pair of two men or two ceremonial dancers either en in fighting or it if ceremonial a engaged in a sham battle one had 6 via u shield and club or some such ar fr tide and both had bad fine headdresses each different the same pair of ac tors were repeated down through the wash in two other places giving us tal think that it was a ceremony for the repetitions were exactly alike A man shooting at a buffalo buffa lo 10 with a bow and arow horned mountain sheep Basket makers sandals with pronounced square toe A snake on the group were two to different time periods one thing mr air kelly die dis covered on this trip was three very plain mountain lion paws cut nicely and neatly in the cliff A wedge man ancient A man with head dress two spirals one curled each way that Is one to the right and the other to the left A series of three near squares nested one in side the other again sandals A big tace face with two large eyes a shield well done with two small pendant tabs two dandy elk very tine fine and well executed A round circle with a boss bosa in it A big deer with a wavy line along its side four designs in red paint rare and st n somewhat some whit recognizable petrified petri fed wood yucca and brigham tea but no sign of the elephant ana an one who has seen that report to us giving the exact location for despite our two trips down there for it we certainly certai uly cannot find it though we searched diligently tor for it and made careful inquiry of range riders ta fa millar with the wash from end to end kelly and I 1 walked twelve miles down don we were six miles miles back when we met mr maxfield and jos robinson Hobl riding for cattle who had just been a pole polo ladder laid against the cliff the top end reaching into a cave like hole but to their disgust they found that the As poles doles were cut with an ax and hence not by the ancient indian mr max field and joe kindly invited us to double up behind them on the hors sea back as aft far as they went on our way tor for as mi air maefiel I 1 said you fellows must like walking damn bad and again he invited us to get on an behind for a damn poor ride beats a good balk we thought so too it saved our little lives tor for sit six miles more ot of hooting it would have put kelly and me on the blink at tyne at fruits on an the way var back we vo saw and arid studied I 1 the three kings and drew the mountain sheep close by noted the hopi hair whorl on one of the figures another wedge shaped figure a shield and a man mail whose foot ended in a small deer and adoth er man design with waist band of three horizontal lines and there a very interesting thing in the tar far distant stant past the ancient indian had carved a deer on the solid flat rock later frost and time broke the rock loosened it from the cliff and today the lines of the deer do not meet by a space of six inches we didn dian t have time and were too stiff and weary from the long bike hike of the day before to tackle the climb to the fruits or hickman kinan bridge and besides tyne oyler had no h hors ors ses for us to use some other occa slon sion for that I 1 had been taken to it by jimmy taylor some years ago and got a good photograph in capitol wash gorge we found the road terrible tor for a bad storm had cut it jt washed it out and the going was indeed fierce we saw an abandoned auto which had been caught in some flood in the past with bushes and driftwood jammed up above the radiator telling a mut story of flood waters danger wreck the roads to torrey were excell ent we stopped and visited bishop and mrs and examined again his very good collection of indian relics relies to which since we had seen it before he had added a fine deer skin face mask for ceremonial use with one deer horn still in place in it for the horned masked dancer in the ceremony and a tine fine snare of sinew baid haid strong and heavy twine with loop for catching rabbits in the runways it was a dandy and this time bishop had the three ta fa buffalo shields of the ancient indians which we again studied and admired we saw the new road to boulder leading out of torrey and some day will go over there NN e also plan on going to roost canyon on the other side Hank robber robbers s hoost roost can on where butch cassidy silver tip and blue john held forth the tae trip was very good we en joyed it R though it was difficult and tired both of us with the long rough toilsome bike lilke we are arb from missouri and will have to be shown the elephant from pow on some one who can go to it must lead us for we can t find it frank beckwith sr 10 |
