Show no increase foreseen in bacterial wilt of corn little if any in increase crease in bacterial wilt of sweet corn stewarts disease for 1935 Is foreseen by dr nell stevens of the united states department of agriculture this Is purely an expert mental forecast based upon studies of winter temperatures dr stevens be alieves that a mild winter or several mild winters are likely to be followed by outbreaks of the disease in the northeastern states his ills conclusions are based upon and supported by win ter temperatures and occurrence of the disease since 1800 1900 he found that when the average of temperature for december january and february was 30 degrees degree or be low the disease was not serious in the following growing season but when the average was 34 degrees or more heavy losses occurred the past winter was slightly warmer in the northeastern states and slightly colder in the north central states than the previous winter but tempera ture did not average above the danger mark except where resistant varieties already are grown for commercial use |
